Overview
Brasserie du Fort Carré is a historic French brewery brand originally established in 1796 in Saint-Dizier, in the Haute-Marne department of the Grand Est region. The brewery was located in the city centre along the canal between Champagne and Burgundy, between the railway station and the museum. The architect Demay carried out major reconstructions around 1930 on the current site. The business was acquired by the Société des Brasseries et Malteries de Champigneulles in 1953, and then by the SARL L. Ortiz et fils in 1955, which produced ice cream. Industrial buildings were added over the following decades, including a factory store in 1965, offices in 1978, and a production workshop. Part of the site was sold to the State around 1958 to house Social Security offices. The location remained an industrial wasteland for years before being transformed into cinemas and shops, inaugurated in 2006 as the Ciné Quai multiplex. The site also hosts a museum dedicated to the role of Miko ice cream in the film industry. Since 2011, the brand "Brasserie du Fort-Carré" has been owned by the Brasserie artisanale du Der in Montier-en-Der, which continues to brew Fort-Carré beer with a range of three beers: Saint-Dizier (historic blonde), Bragarde (hopped amber), and Oreille Rouge (fruity lager). The brewery also appears several times in the 2025 French film Météors directed by Hubert Charuel and Claude Le Pape.
History
The Brasserie du Fort Carré was founded in 1796 in Saint-Dizier, Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region of France. It was located in the city centre along the canal between Champagne and Burgundy, between the railway station and the museum. Around 1930, the architect Demay carried out significant reconstructions on the current site. In 1953, the company was purchased by the Société des Brasseries et Malteries de Champigneulles. Two years later, in 1955, it was acquired by the SARL L. Ortiz et fils, which produced ice cream. Under this ownership, the site saw the construction of an industrial store in 1965, offices in 1978, and a manufacturing workshop. Some buildings were used as a bus garage and as a manager's residence built on former brewery cellars. Around 1958, part of the site was sold to the State to house Social Security offices. The location remained an industrial wasteland for years before being transformed into cinemas and shops, inaugurated in 2006 as the Ciné Quai multiplex. The site also hosts a museum paying tribute to the role of Miko ice cream in the film industry. The brewery appears several times in the 2025 French film Météors, directed by Hubert Charuel and Claude Le Pape.
