Overview

BrahMos Aerospace was formed following the Inter-Governmental Agreement signed on 12 February 1998 in Moscow between India and the Russian Federation. The joint venture was created by the amalgamation of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's Joint Stock Company "Military Industrial Corporation "NPO Mashinostroyenia". The company was established with an authorised capital of $300 million, held 50.5% by the Indian side and 49.5% by the Russian side. It is responsible for the design, development, production and marketing of the BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile system, with the active participation of a consortium of Indian and Russian defence enterprises.

History

India's defence history entered a new chapter in 1983 when decision makers and the scientific community launched the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), sanctioned by the Government of India, aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in missiles. After the Gulf War of the 1990s, it was felt increasingly necessary to equip India's armed forces with a cruise missile system. On 12 February 1998, late Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, then Secretary, Dept. of Defence R&D, on behalf of India, and N V Mikhailov, Russia's first Deputy Defence Minister on behalf of the Russian Federation, signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) in Moscow. This paved the way for BrahMos Aerospace, the joint venture entity between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM). The JV Company BrahMos Aerospace was formed by the amalgamation of DRDO of India and Joint Stock Company "Military Industrial Corporation "NPO Mashinostroyenia" of Russia. The company was established with an authorised capital of $300 million in the ratio of 50.5% from the Indian side and 49.5% from the Russian side. The JV entity is responsible for the design, development, production and marketing of the BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile system with active participation of a consortium of Indian and Russian defence enterprises. Both the Governments of India and Russia on 07 February 2014 agreed to continue their hallmark friendship and strategic partnership towards the BRAHMOS missile programme by extending the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) for an indefinite period.
