Overview
Bozz Music is a German hip-hop record label founded in 2004 by Frankfurt rapper Azad. It was established as a sub-label within the Universal Music label group after Azad moved from Pelham Power Productions to Urban. The label is headquartered in Frankfurt am Main and has been home to artists such as Azad, Erabi, and producers including Brisk Fingaz, Milan Martelli, Benny Blanco, STI, and M3 & Noyd. Bozz Music gained attention in 2004 with a backstage altercation at the MTV HipHop Open festival in Stuttgart and released its first label sampler, Bozz Music Volume 1, the same year. In 2005, the label released Der Bozz, which drew controversy when two tracks were indexed by the German Federal Review Board for Media Harmful to Minors. The label's contract with Urban/Universal expired in 2008, after which releases were handled in cooperation with Groove Attack. In October 2009, Azad announced the closure of Bozz Music due to financial difficulties. After a hiatus, the label released Leben II in 2016 and remains active.
History
Bozz Music was founded in 2004 by Frankfurt rapper Azad as his own sub-label within the Universal Music label group, following his move from Pelham Power Productions to Urban. The label first made headlines in 2004 at the MTV HipHop Open festival in Stuttgart, when a physical altercation occurred backstage between artists of Bozz Music and Aggro Berlin. In the same year, the label released its first sampler, Bozz Music Volume 1. Further controversy arose with the release of Der Bozz in late 2005; the German Federal Review Board for Media Harmful to Minors classified tracks No. 8 (Judgement Day) and No. 10 (Blackout) as "brutalizing" and "glorifying violence" in the Bundesanzeiger of 31 December 2005. The album was re-released on 8 December 2006 as an STI remix album, with the indexed tracks replaced by "Frankfurt mit Warheit" and "A.Z. Pitbull vs. Shmok Muzik". In 2006, the label signed hip-hop producer Benny Blanco, expanding its production team that already included STI, Milan Martelli, M3 & Noyd, and Brisk Fingaz. Rapper Yassir was also signed. In 2008, Jonesmann left the label to found his own, Echte Musik. That same year, Bozz Music's contract with Urban/Universal expired, and future releases were to appear in cooperation with Groove Attack. By 2009, the label's active roster included only Azad, 439, and Jeyz. Bozz Music released Azphalt Inferno, Azad's first street album, followed by his sixth solo album Assassin. Due to financial difficulties, Azad announced in October 2009 that Bozz Music would be closed. After a longer hiatus, Leben II was released on the label in 2016. As of recent years, the label's artists include rapper Azad and Erabi (since 2019), with producers Brisk Fingaz, Milan Martelli, Benny Blanco, STI, and M3 & Noyd. Former artists include Jonesmann, Yassir (now 7skillz), Sezai, Chaker, 439, Animus, Calo, and Jeyz.
