History

The Boys' Brigade originated in the United Kingdom and is described as the first uniformed youth organisation in history, with more than 140 years of history. Its founder, Sir William Alexander Smith, was a Sunday school teacher who combined team spirit and military discipline with religious activities, and on 4 October 1883 gathered about 60 young people for a company meeting at the Free Church of Scotland in Glasgow. The Boys' Brigade later became an international missionary movement with organisations in about 60 countries. In Hong Kong, the Boys' Brigade appeared briefly from 1910 to 1913, and was formally developed in Hong Kong in 1959, when Mr. Fraser, Dr. Timperley and Rev. R. O. Rees established the first company at Union Church. The Hong Kong Council of the Boys' Brigade was established in 1962 to provide training and resources to all companies in Hong Kong and to assist their operation and development; in 1963 it was granted exemption from society registration by the Hong Kong Police Force. In 1985, The Hong Kong Council of the Boys' Brigade was formally renamed The Boys' Brigade, Hong Kong. Since 1 March 2019, The Boys' Brigade, Hong Kong has operated the Event Centre Ma Wan Activity Centre, a three-storey independent activity building.
