Overview

Bourgogne des Flandres is a brewery and distillery in the heart of Bruges, Belgium. Its official site states the brewery has existed since 1765, and its history page traces the origins to a farm in Loppem where Pierre-Jacques Van Houtryve laid the first stone of a family craft. The site describes the Brasserie Bourgogne des Flandres as housing two distinct worlds, from mixed fermentation to the ancestral recipe of the Van Houtryve family, and presents an immersive visitor experience spanning a malt attic and oak barrels of the distillery.

History

According to the official history page, the brewery's origins lie on a farm in Loppem, where Pierre-Jacques Van Houtryve laid the first stone of a family craft in 1765. In 1825, the son of brewer Corneille IV Van Houtryve sought to establish the Den Os brewery in Bruges, and the brewery was subsequently operated by his eldest son; after Corneille, Liévin Van Houtryve took over, and Oscar Van Houtryve later passed the Den Os brewery to Jean Van Houtryve. Between 1908 and 1957, Oscar Van Houtryve acquired the La Marine brewery in Wollestraat for his son Etienne Van Houtryve, who brewed there until 1921 and briefly produced Bourgogne des Flandres, as did his brother. In 1911, Bourgogne des Flandres was registered with the Commercial Court of Bruges. In 1913, Albert Van Caillie, husband of Oscar's daughter Hélène, became the last brewer in De Sterre/Ten Ezele, a brewery whose history dates back to 1415; that brewery closed in 1952 under his management, where he brewed Phenix beer. The official homepage states the brewery has existed since 1765 and describes the Brasserie Bourgogne des Flandres as housing two distinct worlds, from mixed fermentation to the ancestral recipe of the Van Houtryve family.
