Overview

Borsa Istanbul (often abbreviated BIST) is the sole exchange entity of Turkey, formed in 2013 by merging the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE), the Istanbul Gold Exchange and the Derivatives Exchange of Turkey (VOB). It operates as a joint-stock company, Borsa İstanbul A.Ş., and is the central marketplace for Turkish capital markets, hosting equities, debt securities, derivatives, precious metals, and other instruments under a single integrated platform. The exchange traces its institutional lineage to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, which began trading in 1986 as Turkey's first modern securities market, and to earlier Ottoman-era and Republican-era market traditions in Istanbul. The 2013 consolidation created a single exchange brand intended to strengthen Istanbul's ambition to become a regional financial center. Borsa Istanbul lists hundreds of companies, including Turkey's largest industrial and financial groups, and its BIST 100 index is the country's headline equity benchmark. Ownership is a mix of the Turkish state and private institutions; the Turkish Wealth Fund (Türkiye Wealth Fund) holds a significant stake, alongside brokers and other market participants. The exchange is regulated by Turkey's Capital Markets Board (SPK) and works closely with the central bank and other authorities. It has pursued partnerships and technology upgrades, including cooperation with international exchanges and index providers, and has sought to broaden its investor base internationally. As a brand, Borsa Istanbul stands for the modernization and internationalization of Turkish capital markets. It promotes products such as single-stock futures, index derivatives, and precious metals trading, and it runs market-operations and listing services for companies. Its public profile is tied to the performance of Turkish equities and the lira, and it is a key institution in Turkey's financial infrastructure.

History

Borsa Istanbul's history is rooted in the long tradition of securities trading in Istanbul. The modern Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) was established in 1986 as Turkey's first contemporary securities market, following the liberalization of the Turkish economy in the 1980s. It quickly became the central venue for trading Turkish equities and government bonds. In parallel, Turkey developed specialized exchanges: the Istanbul Gold Exchange, created in the 1990s to organize trading in gold and precious metals, and the Derivatives Exchange of Turkey (VOB), founded in 2005 to trade futures and options. These separate institutions served different segments of the market. In 2013, the three exchanges were merged into a single entity, Borsa Istanbul, as part of a government strategy to create an integrated exchange and strengthen Istanbul's position as a regional financial hub. The new brand consolidated equities, debt, derivatives and precious metals trading under one corporate roof and one trading platform. Since then, Borsa Istanbul has invested in technology and market infrastructure, introduced new products, and pursued international partnerships. Ownership was partly transferred to the Turkish Wealth Fund, reflecting the state's strategic interest in the exchange. The exchange has also worked to attract foreign investors and to develop Istanbul as a financial center, while operating under the supervision of the Capital Markets Board of Turkey.
