Overview

Bootswerft Mader (officially Bootswerft Leonhard Mader GmbH) is a German boatyard based in Fisching near Waging am See in Bavaria. It was founded in 1952 as a carpentry workshop by Leonhard Mader senior, and by 1954 the workshop was already building wooden boats. Over the following decades the yard evolved into one of the most successful builders of Olympic and international racing sailboats, gaining a reputation for craftsmanship, class-rule compliance and competitive performance. The yard builds and repairs sailboats and manufactures glass-fibre (GRP) and carbon-fibre components. Its product range has covered Olympic classes such as the 470, Star, Flying Dutchman (FD), Tempest and Finn, as well as international and national classes including the 505, Yngling, Korsar, Kielzugvogel, Schwertzugvogel, Streamline and Dyas. Mader boats have won Olympic medals and world championships across many of these classes, and the yard states that Olympic champions, world champions, European champions and numerous national champions have remained loyal to it for decades. Beyond racing sailboats, Bootswerft Mader produces GRP and carbon-fibre parts to customer drawings and specifications, using vacuum infusion and hand lay-up processes. Its client list has included BMW, Audi and Rolls-Royce, and it has also supplied interior fittings for the joinery firm Asenkerschbaumer in Asten. The yard also carries out restoration of wooden boats and professional repainting, and is known for high-quality GRP repair work. The company operates as a private limited company (GmbH) and remains family-associated. Its workshop and office are located at Zum Seeteufel 6, 83329 Waging am See, Germany. The yard continues to build new boats, including a new Flying Dutchman model, and to serve the racing and recreational sailing communities.

History

Bootswerft Mader traces its origins to 1952, when Leonhard Mader senior founded a carpentry workshop in Fisching near Waging am See in Bavaria, Germany. By 1954 the workshop had begun building wooden boats, marking the start of its boatbuilding activity. Over the following decades the yard specialised in racing sailboats, developing expertise in class-rule construction and high-performance hulls. The yard's reputation grew through success in Olympic and international classes. At the 1972 Olympic sailing events in Kiel, the Finn-class boats supplied by the organiser were built by Mader. At the 1976 Olympic sailing events on Lake Ontario near Kingston, all but one of the Tempest-class boats were Mader-built, and a Brazilian Flying Dutchman built by Mader (sailed by Reinaldo Conrad and Peter Ficker) won bronze. In 1977 Dennis Conner won the Star world championship in a Mader-built Star. At the 1980 Summer Olympics, with sailing events in Tallinn, Mader boats won gold and silver in the Star class and bronze in the Flying Dutchman class. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Mader boats took silver in both the Star and Flying Dutchman classes and bronze in the Flying Dutchman. At the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the top three places in the Flying Dutchman class all went to Mader boats; a Mader Star also took third place in Seoul in 1988. Success continued into the 2000s. In 2000 Mader boats won first place at both the Tempest and Flying Dutchman world championships. In 2001 a Mader Tempest won the world championship. In 2003 a Mader Star won first place at the Tempest world championship in Grandson, Switzerland, and another won first place at the Kieler Woche. In 2004 Mader boats took first, second, fourth and fifth places at the Flying Dutchman world championship in Warnemünde and the top three places at the Tempest world championship. In 2005 Mader boats took first, second and third places at both the Tempest and Flying Dutchman world championships. In 2006 Mader boats won first, second and third places at the Tempest world championship. Beyond these headline results, Mader boats have won numerous other titles since the yard's founding, including European championships and various German, Austrian and Swiss national championships. The yard has also diversified into composite manufacturing, producing GRP and carbon-fibre parts to customer drawings using vacuum infusion and hand lay-up processes, with clients including BMW, Audi and Rolls-Royce. It has also supplied interior fittings for the joinery firm Asenkerschbaumer in Asten, and carries out restoration of wooden boats and professional repainting. Leonhard Mader died in 2003, as reported by yacht.de. The company continues to operate as Bootswerft Leonhard Mader GmbH from its base in Fisching near Waging am See, building new boats including a new Flying Dutchman model and serving racing sailors and boat owners.
