Overview
Book Genshisha (書肆ゲンシシャ) is an antiquarian bookshop, small publisher, and culture center located in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Japan. It opened in February 2016 and is operated by the company Genshisha no Tsudoi (幻視者の集い), whose representative is Shinji Fujii. The shop is known for its curated atmosphere inspired by the 'wunderkammer' or cabinet of curiosities, and it deals in used books, artworks, specimens, and visual materials that challenge conventional ways of seeing. The store's inventory is notably eclectic. It carries Japanese and foreign-language books—English, French, Spanish, and Chinese—reflecting Beppu's international character. It also specializes in fantasy literature and fantasy painting, and maintains a broad collection of local Beppu historical materials, old postcards, and vintage photographs. Its photographic holdings include postmortem photographs, as well as images related to death, deformity, war, geisha, pleasure quarters, LGBT subjects, and Beppu itself. The shop also handles handwritten manuscripts and shunga (erotic art), which can be viewed in-store. Beyond retail, Book Genshisha functions as a private manga museum, housing a collection of nostalgic and rare manga. It operates as a time-based facility where visitors can read in-store or purchase books, similar to a museum, library, or art gallery. The shop is reservation-only. In addition to its physical location near Beppu Park, it runs exhibitions and events, including shows in Kawasaki and Hiroshima, and maintains an online presence through its website and X (formerly Twitter) account. The shop's logo was designed by Tokimi Matsuo, a 99-year-old former sign painter living in Beppu.
History
Book Genshisha opened in February 2016 in Aoyamacho, Beppu, Oita Prefecture, near Beppu Park and about a seven-minute walk from Beppu Station on the JR Kyushu Nippo Main Line. It was established by Shinji Fujii, who serves as the representative of the operating company, Genshisha no Tsudoi (幻視者の集い). At the time of its founding, the company had one employee. From the outset, the shop was conceived not merely as a bookstore but as a space themed around the 'wunderkammer' or cabinet of curiosities—a place where books, paintings, specimens, and artworks are arranged to provoke new ways of seeing. This curatorial approach led to a diverse inventory that includes used and rare books, fantasy literature, foreign-language books, local historical materials, vintage photographs, postcards, manuscripts, and shunga. The shop also became known for its collection of postmortem photographs and images related to death, deformity, war, geisha, pleasure quarters, and LGBT subjects. In addition to selling books and art, Book Genshisha operates as a private manga museum, drawing on the owner's membership in the Japan Society for Studies in Cartoons and Comics (日本マンガ学会). The shop offers a time-based experience where visitors can read in-store or purchase items, functioning like a museum, library, or art gallery. It is reservation-only. The shop has expanded its activities beyond Beppu through exhibitions and events. Its website lists events such as a talk event at Hiroshima PARCO and an exhibition in Kawasaki Mizonokuchi. It also maintains an active presence on X (formerly Twitter) under the handle @Book_Genshisha. The shop's logo was created by Tokimi Matsuo, a 99-year-old former sign painter residing in Beppu.
