Overview
The Bonner Hütte, also known as the Neue Bonner Hütte, is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) owned and operated by the Bonn Section of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV). It sits at an elevation of 1,713 metres above sea level in the Gurktal Alps, near Katschberg in the Austrian state of Salzburg. The hut serves as a base for hikers and mountaineers exploring the surrounding peaks, including the Teuerlnock, Aineck, Schereck, Schwarzwand, and the Laußnitzsee lake. It is accessible on foot from several valleys and by car via Frankenberg in the municipality of Rennweg. The facility offers overnight accommodation and refreshments, typical of alpine club huts. Originally a private alpine farm hut known as the Zechner-Hütte, it was acquired by the Bonn Section in 1964 and, after extensive renovation, reopened as the Bonner Hütte. The name distinguishes it from the older Bonner Hütte, the section's former hut near Toblach in South Tyrol. Today it remains an active mountain hut within the DAV network, welcoming visitors during the summer hiking season.
History
The Neue Bonner Hütte was originally a private alpine farm hut where occasional hikers spent the night. After World War II, it was expanded by its then-owner, the 'Zechner-Bauer', from whom the old hut name Zechner-Hütte derives; this name still appears on some maps. In 1964, the Bonn Section of the German Alpine Club took over the property. Following four years of extensive renovation, the former Zechner-Hütte reopened as the Bonner Hütte. To distinguish it from the old Bonner Hütte—the section's former hut near Toblach in South Tyrol—it is also referred to as the 'new' Bonner Hütte. The hut has since served as a base for hikers and mountaineers in the Gurktal Alps, offering accommodation and refreshments. It remains under the ownership and operation of the DAV Bonn Section.
