Overview

The Bonn-Matreier Hütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) in the Venedigergruppe of the Austrian Alps, situated at 2,745 metres above sea level in the northwest of the municipality of Virgen, East Tyrol. It is jointly owned and operated by the Sektion Bonn of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV) and the Sektion Matrei of the Austrian Alpine Club (Österreichischer Alpenverein, ÖAV). This German-Austrian partnership is described as the only such hut community in the Alps that has endured through all the upheavals of history. The hut offers panoramic views stretching from Slovenia's Triglav across the Schobergruppe, the Lienzer Dolomiten, the Lasörlinggruppe, the Villgratner Berge and as far as the South Tyrolean Dolomites. Several three-thousand-metre peaks lie within the hut's catchment area, making it a base for mountaineers and hikers on the Venediger Höhenweg. Accommodation consists of 40 mattress dormitory places and 13 beds in rooms. The Bonn-Matreier Hütte was built in 1931/1932 as a replacement for the Bonner Hütte in South Tyrol, which had been built between 1884 and 1887 and was expropriated by Italy in 1919. It was officially opened on 14 August 1932. The hut was extensively renovated and expanded in the early 1980s, a new material cableway with extended works traffic was built in the 1990s, and at the beginning of the new millennium it was equipped with a wastewater treatment system (filter bag system) and a modern energy supply (combined heat and power unit running on biodiesel, plus a photovoltaic system). Access routes include from the Wallhorner Mähder car park (1,750 m) via the Nilljochhütte (1,975 m) through the Nilltal in 4 hours; from Virgen/Marin through the Grosses or Kleines Nilltal in 4 hours; from the Obermauern Marin car park via the Gottschaunalm and Nilltal (1,350 m ascent) in 4.5 hours; and from the Budam car park via the Nilljochhütte and Grosses Nilltal (1,250 m ascent) in 3.5 hours. The hut is a stop on the Venediger Höhenweg and connects to other huts including the Sajathütte, Eisseehütte, Bodenalm, Nilljochhütte, Badener Hütte, Johannishütte and Defreggerhaus. Popular tour destinations from the hut include the Hoher Eichham (3,371 m), Sailkopf (3,209 m), Rauhkopf (3,070 m), Kuhhaut (3,190 m) and Wunspitze (3,219 m).

History

The Bonn-Matreier Hütte was built in 1931/1932 by the Sektion Bonn of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV) and the Sektion Matrei of the Austrian Alpine Club, which sought a partner due to the difficult economic conditions of the time. It replaced the Bonner Hütte in South Tyrol, which had been constructed between 1884 and 1887 and was expropriated by Italy in 1919. The new hut, located on the Venediger Höhenweg, was officially opened on 14 August 1932. In the early 1980s the hut underwent extensive renovation and expansion. In the 1990s a new material cableway with extended works traffic was built. At the beginning of the new millennium the hut was equipped with a wastewater disposal system (filter bag system) and a modern energy supply system (a combined heat and power unit running on biodiesel, plus a photovoltaic system). The Bonn-Matreier Hütte is described as the only German-Austrian hut community in the Alps that has endured through all the upheavals of history. It remains a joint operation of the DAV Sektion Bonn and the ÖAV Sektion Matrei.
