Overview

Bonanno Editore is an Italian publishing house based in Acireale, in the province of Catania, Sicily. It was founded in 1960 by Giuseppe "Pippo" Bonanno (1935–2005), son of the bookseller Mauro Bonanno, who had already commissioned the printing of several volumes. The imprint established itself nationally as a reference point for Risorgimento studies, thanks to collaborators and authors such as Giovanni Spadolini, Noel Blackiston, Rosario Romeo, Vittorio Frosini, Mario Condorelli and Denis Mack Smith, and was distributed in bookshops by La Nuova Italia. In the 1980s Giuseppe Bonanno's son, Mauro, recently graduated, began directing a label of the publishing house, A&B, which published Lorenzo Vecchio's book Mia madre non chiude mai, winner of the Premio Vittorini, giving new momentum to the company. Later, under the A&B imprint, books by Pier Francesco Pingitore and Pino Caruso were released. Bonanno adopted a black cat (the symbol of the Bonanno family) as its new logo and entered Mondadori's distribution network, leaving it in the early 1990s; today it is distributed by Messaggerie Libri. In 2009 it received the Premio Giancarlo Siani. Also in 2009, the Gruppo editoriale Bonanno launched the Tipheret imprint, a publishing house that issues titles mostly related to traditional, esoteric and sacred studies. Today the publishing house continues its commitment in the historical field as well as in the political-social and literary fields, with a strong focus on social studies. For several years Bonanno has collaborated with various universities. Its catalogue spans numerous subject areas, including environment, anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art, current affairs, biography, cinema, classics, communication, criminology, literary criticism, law, economics, philosophy, photography, comics, gastronomy, geography, guides, engineering, literature, linguistics, medicine, music, fiction, children's fiction, poetry, social policy, political science, psychology, religion, science and technology, human and social sciences, sociology, sport, history, theatre, tourism and travel. The company operates as a private, family-owned publishing group under the name Gruppo editoriale Bonanno srl.
