Overview

Boie GmbH & Co. KG is a medium-sized German energy supplier headquartered in Lübeck. The company traces its origins to 1876, when Wilhelm Marty founded the trading house Marty & Co. in Lübeck. Ernst Boie, who began as an apprentice, later became a partner and then sole owner, and in 1898 the firm was renamed Ernst Boie. Under his leadership the business focused on liquid fuels such as petroleum, petrol, oil and the branded product "Erbojol", and it grew rapidly as an oil wholesale, freight forwarding and insurance company. In 1925 the company opened its first filling station, marked in its own green-yellow-black livery. By the time Ernst Boie died, Erbojol filling stations were a familiar sight across Northern Germany, from Mecklenburg and Schleswig-Holstein up to Flensburg and into Oldenburg. Around 1974 the company's own filling stations were converted to the AVIA International brand. Today Boie operates as a mineral oil trader and energy supplier. It sells mineral oil and biofuel products, heating oil, liquefied gases and lubricants, and also provides individual energy contracting for customers with high energy consumption. As a mineral oil company it is a member of AVIA, and its road and motorway service stations in Northern Germany are mainly branded with the AVIA logo; a few stations still carry the Unitol brand. Almost half of the filling stations it operates are commercial filling stations located on company premises. The company remains privately owned by the founding family, now in its fourth generation, and is managed by the shareholders Aine and Ole Boie. With its headquarters in Lübeck and branches in Hamburg, Rostock, Schuby and Braunschweig, Boie is present throughout Northern Germany and can deliver promptly. It maintains its own vehicle fleet and supply depots. The company also regularly trains apprentices in wholesale and foreign trade. Its product range includes heating oil, liquefied gas (tank gas, cylinder gas and autogas), fuels and lubricants, as well as services such as heating modernisation, conversion from heating oil to liquefied gas, and heat pumps. Boie was among the first companies to sell liquefied gas, roughly 80 years ago. Under the AVIA brand it operates filling stations that offer conventional fuels as well as autogas and AdBlue.

History

The company's history begins in 1876, when Wilhelm Marty founded the trading house Marty & Co. in Lübeck. Ernst Boie started there as an apprentice after finishing school. After several years he had earned a position of trust, became a partner and later owner of the business. In 1898 the firm was renamed Ernst Boie. With foresight he recognised the technical development of transport and the associated importance of liquid fuels and operating materials. Petroleum, petrol, oil and "Erbojol" became the main products, and the firm Ernst Boie was founded as an oil wholesale, freight forwarding and insurance company, developing rapidly. In 1925 the company opened its first filling station, whose signage at the time used its own company brand in green-yellow-black colours. When Boie died, his Erbojol filling stations could be seen all over Northern Germany – Mecklenburg, the province of Schleswig-Holstein up to Flensburg, Oldenburg and elsewhere. In 1902 the administrative building at the corner of Kanalstraße 24/Rosenpforte was built by the architect Carl Mühlenpfordt in the style of North German homeland protection. Around 1974 the company's own filling stations were converted to the AVIA International brand. Today Boie is a medium-sized German energy supplier.
