Overview

Bodeta Süßwaren GmbH is one of the largest confectionery manufacturers in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Founded in 1892 in Oschersleben (Bode) as Becker & Schmidt, the company initially produced pralines and chocolate bars. The brand name "Bodeta" was registered in 1923, derived from the Bode valley, and the entire operation was renamed Bodeta in 1933. After World War II, the factory was expropriated and became a state-owned enterprise in East Germany, later integrated into the VEB Kombinat Süßwaren Delitzsch in 1980. Following German reunification, the company was reprivatized in 1991 and returned to its former owners, then sold to the Swiss Indawisa Holding AG in 1992. In 1993, Bodeta took over the production facilities of Johannes G. Munzel KG from Berlin, adding sprinkles and wafers to its range. The company was an early adopter of the Transfair seal for confectionery in 1997 and received organic certification for its candies in 1999. In 2003, Bodeta obtained the International Food Standard (IFS) certification, which was renewed at a higher level in 2020. The company also implemented an energy management system according to ISO 50001. Bodeta's product portfolio includes sugar-free and sugar-containing candies and dragees, with a specialty in nut dragees. The company employs around 85 people and is a significant local employer. In September 2022, Bodeta filed for insolvency, but in January 2023, the chewing gum manufacturer As-Com Confection from Walldorf became the new investor. Despite financial challenges, including negative equity of €4.2 million in 2011 and €8.6 million in 2021, Bodeta continues to operate and innovate in the competitive confectionery market.

History

Bodeta Süßwaren GmbH was founded in 1892 in Oschersleben (Bode) as the company Becker & Schmidt. Initially, it produced pralines and chocolate bars. In 1923, during the Weimar Republic, the brand name "Bodeta" (derived from the Bode valley) was registered as a trademark. In 1933, the entire operation was renamed Bodeta, and at that time it employed 300 people. After World War II, the chocolate factory, located in the Soviet occupation zone, was expropriated in 1945 and converted into a state-owned enterprise (Volkseigener Betrieb). In 1980, as part of the East German government's consolidation of companies into combines, it was affiliated with the VEB Kombinat Süßwaren Delitzsch. After the peaceful revolution and German reunification, the factory was reprivatized in 1991 and returned to its former owners by the Treuhand agency. In 1992, they sold it to the Swiss Indawisa Holding AG. In 1993, Bodeta took over the production facilities of Johannes G. Munzel KG from Berlin, simultaneously starting the production of sprinkles and wafers. In 1997, Bodeta was one of the first worldwide to introduce the Transfair seal for confectionery. Shortly before the turn of the millennium, in 1999, it achieved certification as a manufacturer of candies with the organic seal. In 2003, the company received the International Food Standard (IFS) certification for the first time, which was confirmed again at a higher level in 2020. Additionally, an energy management system according to ISO 50001 was introduced. At the end of September 2022, the company had to file for insolvency. In December 2022, it was announced that an unnamed investor intended to participate in the company. In January 2023, the chewing gum manufacturer As-Com Confection from Walldorf (Baden-Württemberg) declared itself as the new investor. The company continues to operate, producing sugar-free and sugar-containing candies and dragees, with a focus on quality and innovation.
