Boba Guys

Boba Guys is a milk tea brand whose stated mission is to bridge cultures. According to its official website, it was started to share the milk tea the founders remember from childhood, using fresh ingredients rather than powdered ones. It uses Straus Family Creamery organic milk with homebrewed heirloom organic tea from Five Mountains, and makes its syrup and almond jelly in-house. Founders Bin and Andrew met while working together at Timbuk2 and bonded over lunch runs to a local boba shop in the Mission; after that shop closed, they learned to make boba milk tea and held their first pop-up event with friends at Ken Ken Ramen two months later.

Bin and Andrew worked together at Timbuk2, the messenger bag and accessories company. Bin found the only other Asian guy at Timbuk2 and asked Andrew if he wanted to play ping pong. After playing ping pong for an hour, they realized they had the same upbringing despite their geographic and cultural differences: Bin, the small-town country boy from Texas and Andrew, the nerd from New Jersey/California. They became great friends and bonded over lunch runs to the local boba shop in the Mission. One day it closed down. They panicked, but soon took matters into their own hands and started learning how to make the perfect cup of boba milk tea. Two months later, they threw their first pop-up event with their friends at Ken Ken Ramen. They did not have a business plan, a customer base, or even a proper kitchen; they just knew they wanted the world to try their boba milk tea and break cultural barriers.
