Overview

Boat Rocker Studios is a Canadian multinational entertainment company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario. Its activities span scripted and unscripted television, film and digital production, animation, international distribution, brand and intellectual-property licensing, and venture investment. The company originated in 2013 when Temple Street Productions created a digital studio. Temple Street had become known for scripted television and other screen productions, and the new studio provided a platform for expanding into digital and multiplatform content. A major transformation occurred in 2016. Following Fairfax Financial's majority investment in Temple Street, the business was reorganized beneath a new publicly traded parent called Boat Rocker Media. The structure brought together several complementary divisions: Boat Rocker Studios for production, Boat Rocker Rights for distribution, Boat Rocker Animation for animated content, Boat Rocker Brands for intellectual-property activities, and Boat Rocker Ventures for investments. Temple Street's co-presidents, David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg, became the principal leaders of the broader group. The strategy was to create a larger platform capable of developing, financing, producing, distributing, and monetizing content across multiple formats and territories. Boat Rocker expanded through a series of acquisitions and investments. It purchased or invested in studios including Radical Sheep Productions, Jam Filled Entertainment, Proper Television, Insight Productions, Matador Content, Platform One Media, and Industrial Brothers. These transactions added children's and family programming, animation, factual and unscripted production, American scripted and unscripted capabilities, and additional production infrastructure. The group also invested in companies such as MarcoPolo Learning, Toronto Arrows, Untitled Entertainment, and TeaTime Pictures, linking content production with education technology, talent, sports, and creator-led development. The company repeatedly adjusted its operating structure. In 2017, factual and unscripted operations were consolidated into Crooked Horse Productions, while Temple Street concentrated on scripted work. In 2020, Platform One Media became Boat Rocker Studios, Scripted, and Temple Street Productions was subsequently folded into that unit. Boat Rocker also established Maven in 2021 to develop female-led and emerging-voice narratives. In 2022, the scripted and unscripted operations were reorganized under a combined studio structure. Boat Rocker Studios became a standalone private company in 2025. Blue Ant Media acquired selected Boat Rocker Media assets, including Insight Productions, Jam Filled Entertainment, and Proper Television, while the remaining assets, including Boat Rocker Studios and its brand-licensing activities, were sold in a management buyout to IDJCo, a company owned by the founders. The transaction was completed on August 1, 2025, and the continuing private company adopted the Boat Rocker Studios name. On August 21, 2025, it acquired a majority stake in Toronto animation studio Industrial Brothers, building on an earlier minority investment and first-look coproduction relationship. Today, Boat Rocker Studios functions as a content and intellectual-property platform rather than a single-program television label. Its business model combines owned and commissioned production, distribution and licensing, partnerships with independent creators and studios, and selective strategic investment. The company operates across Canadian, American, and international markets, with leadership historically centered on Fortier, Schneeberg, and chief executive John Young.

History

Boat Rocker Studios began in June 2013 as a digital studio established by Temple Street Productions. The initiative extended Temple Street's production activities into digital and emerging distribution formats. In 2015, Temple Street also created an internal distribution operation, later known as Boat Rocker Rights. In February 2016, after Fairfax Financial made a majority investment in Temple Street, the business was reorganized under Boat Rocker Media. The new parent combined five principal areas: Boat Rocker Studios, Boat Rocker Rights, Boat Rocker Animation, Boat Rocker Brands, and Boat Rocker Ventures. David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg, Temple Street's co-presidents, became the leading executives of the expanded group. The restructuring was designed to support larger investments and multiplatform content development while retaining the creative approach associated with Temple Street. Expansion followed quickly. Boat Rocker acquired Radical Sheep Productions in March 2016 and Jam Filled Entertainment in August. Jam Filled became a children's and family animation subsidiary, while its management continued to run the studio. In the same period, Boat Rocker acquired the library and distribution arm of Peace Point Entertainment Group, and Jam Filled acquired assets of Arc Productions after that studio entered receivership. Boat Rocker Rights expanded its catalogue through international rights agreements and library transactions. In 2017, Boat Rocker created Crooked Horse Productions by combining its factual and unscripted operations. Temple Street was then dedicated primarily to scripted production. Later that year, Boat Rocker acquired Proper Television and integrated its distribution activity into Boat Rocker Rights. The following year, it acquired and subsequently divested FremantleMedia's Kids & Family Entertainment division and purchased a 70 percent interest in Insight Productions. In November 2018, the company acquired Matador Content, giving it a direct American unscripted presence. The group continued to develop its investment and partnership model. It invested in MarcoPolo Learning in 2017, Untitled Entertainment in 2019, and TeaTime Pictures in 2021, while also investing in the Toronto Arrows rugby organization. Boat Rocker acquired Platform One Media in 2019 and entered a first-look arrangement with Dakota Johnson's TeaTime Pictures. In December 2020, Platform One became Boat Rocker Studios, Scripted, and Katie O'Connell Marsh was elevated to a senior leadership role. Matador co-founder Jay Peterson became head of the unscripted operation, and Temple Street Productions was closed and folded into the scripted unit later that month. In 2021, Boat Rocker launched Maven, led by Jessica Sebastian-Dayeh, to focus on female-led stories and emerging voices. A 2022 reorganization merged the unscripted division into the Los Angeles-based scripted structure, with Steve Lescroart and Jay Peterson retaining operational responsibilities. Todd Lubin later succeeded Peterson as president of unscripted in 2023. Boat Rocker completed the purchase of the remaining 30 percent of Insight Productions in August 2024. The company's corporate identity changed substantially in 2025. Blue Ant Media announced a reverse-takeover transaction involving selected Boat Rocker Media assets. Blue Ant acquired businesses including Insight Productions, Jam Filled Entertainment, and Proper Television, while Boat Rocker Studios and related brand-licensing assets were sold through a management buyout for a reported $18 million. Both transactions closed on August 1, 2025. The continuing private company was owned through IDJCo and took the Boat Rocker Studios name. On August 21, 2025, it acquired a majority stake in Industrial Brothers, strengthening its animation activities.
