Overview

BNY Investments is the investment management division of BNY, the financial-services group formerly known as The Bank of New York Mellon. It is one of the world’s large asset-management organizations and provides investment capabilities to institutional investors, wealth managers, intermediaries, corporations, sovereign and public-sector clients, and other professional investors. Its activities span public and private markets, including equities, fixed income, cash management, multi-asset strategies, alternatives, private credit, real assets, and liability-oriented solutions. The division was created in 2007 following the merger of The Bank of New York and Mellon Financial. The transaction brought together BNY Asset Management and Mellon Asset Management, creating BNY Mellon Investment Management as a major operating division within the newly formed BNY Mellon group. Mellon’s platform was substantially larger at the time, with approximately $930 billion in assets under management compared with roughly $179 billion for BNY Asset Management. The combined organization inherited a collection of specialist investment businesses, including Dreyfus, Newton, Walter Scott, Boston Company Asset Management, Standish Mellon Asset Management, Ivy Asset Management, Alcentra, and Urdang Capital Management. Rather than replacing those businesses with one centralized investment process, BNY Investments developed a multi-boutique model. Under this structure, specialist managers retain substantial autonomy over investment philosophy, portfolio construction, research, and client relationships, while the parent organization provides shared distribution, operational infrastructure, governance, technology, and access to global markets. This model allows the group to present a broad range of strategies while preserving the identities and investment cultures of individual firms. International expansion was an early priority. In 2007, the organization acquired Brazilian manager ARX Capital Management and established a joint venture with Western Securities in China focused on retail money management. It also explored relationships with sovereign wealth funds and other large institutional investors in the Middle East. In 2009, it acquired Insight Investment from Lloyds Banking Group and purchased a minority stake in alternatives specialist Siguler Guff. The business also underwent portfolio rationalization. Ivy Asset Management’s fund-of-hedge-funds operation was closed in 2010 after declining client interest and regulatory scrutiny connected with its exposure to investment-related controversies. In 2017, the group sold its real-assets business, CenterSquare Investment Management, formerly associated with Urdang Capital Management. In 2018, Mellon Capital Management, Standish Mellon Asset Management, and The Boston Company Asset Management were combined under the Mellon Investments name, partly to share the growing costs of technology, data, and research. In 2022, Franklin Templeton agreed to acquire Alcentra, BNY Mellon Investment Management’s private-credit business, for approximately $1 billion. The transaction closed on November 1, 2022, reducing the scope of the group’s directly owned private-credit platform. BNY reported that investment-management assets under management fell 24.6% year over year as of December 31, 2022, citing market declines, the stronger U.S. dollar, and the Alcentra disposal. In June 2024, the division adopted the BNY Investments brand. The rebrand aligned the investment-management business with BNY’s broader corporate identity while retaining its specialist-manager structure and broad institutional and intermediary client base.

History

BNY Investments originated in the asset-management businesses of The Bank of New York and Mellon Financial. Before their corporate merger, Bank of New York operated BNY Asset Management, while Mellon Financial controlled Mellon Asset Management. When the two parent institutions merged in July 2007, their investment businesses were combined into BNY Mellon Investment Management. The inherited platform was heavily weighted toward Mellon. At the time of the merger, Mellon Asset Management reportedly managed approximately $930 billion, compared with approximately $179 billion for BNY Asset Management. The combined organization therefore incorporated a large collection of established specialist managers, including Dreyfus, Newton, Walter Scott, Boston Company Asset Management, Standish Mellon Asset Management, Ivy Asset Management, Alcentra, and Urdang Capital Management. Ronald O'Hanley became chief executive of the new investment-management division, while several senior BNY Asset Management executives departed after the integration. The division initially pursued international expansion and broader access to emerging markets. In 2007 it acquired Brazil-based ARX Capital Management and entered a Chinese joint venture with Western Securities aimed at retail money management. It also considered opportunities involving Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds, including potential relationships with the Kuwait Investment Authority and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. In 2009, the group acquired Insight Investment from Lloyds Banking Group for £235 million and bought a 20% stake in Siguler Guff. The organization later made significant portfolio and operating changes. Ivy Asset Management’s fund-of-hedge-funds business was closed in early 2010. The closure followed declining client interest after the Amaranth Advisors losses and regulatory attention concerning advice associated with Bernard Madoff investments. In November 2012, Ivy reached a $210 million settlement with U.S. authorities over that matter. In September 2017, BNY Mellon Investment Management sold its real-assets business, CenterSquare Investment Management, to Lovell Minnick Partners. CenterSquare had previously been connected with Urdang Capital Management, one of the businesses inherited from BNY Asset Management. In 2018, Mellon Capital Management, Standish Mellon Asset Management, and The Boston Company Asset Management were merged into Mellon Investments. The consolidation was intended in part to spread rising technology and research expenses across a more integrated platform. The division continued to adjust its business mix in the 2020s. In May 2022, Franklin Templeton agreed to buy Alcentra, the private-credit unit, for approximately $1 billion. The transaction closed on November 1, 2022. BNY subsequently reported that assets under management for the investment-management division had fallen 24.6% from the prior year as of December 31, 2022. Reported factors included declining market values, the effect of a stronger U.S. dollar, and the disposal of Alcentra. In June 2024, BNY Mellon Investment Management was rebranded BNY Investments. The new name connected the division more directly with BNY’s corporate identity while preserving its multi-boutique operating approach. The business remains an active global investment-management platform offering specialist strategies across public and private markets.
