History
BNP Paribas' ties with Japan go back more than 150 years to the end of the Edo period. In 1867 (Keio 3), Comptoir National d'Escompte de Paris (CNEP), the predecessor of Banque Nationale de Paris, opened a branch in Yokohama; in 1907 (Meiji 40), Paribas took part in a foreign bond issuance by the Japanese government on the European market. In 1968, Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) opened a Tokyo representative office, and in 1973 it began operating as a Tokyo branch. Also in 1973, Compagnie Financière de Paris et des Pays-Bas (later Banque Paribas) became the first European company to be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In 2000, BNP and Paribas merged to form BNP Paribas, and the Japanese bases were renamed to the Tokyo Branch of BNP Paribas Bank, the Tokyo Branch of BNP Paribas Securities, and BNP Paribas Asset Management. In 2011, the Tokyo branch of the Hong Kong entity BNP Paribas Securities was incorporated in Japan and began operating as BNP Paribas Securities (Japan) Limited. In 2018, the Japanese branches of the French entities Cardiff Life and Cardiff Non-Life were incorporated in Japan and began operating as Cardiff Life Insurance and Cardiff Non-Life Insurance. In 2023, the Tokyo Branch of BNP Paribas Bank marked 50 years since starting operations.
