Fortis crisis and government intervention
The wider Fortis group suffered severe pressure during the global financial crisis after its participation in the ABN AMRO acquisition and exposure to deteriorating credit markets. Governments intervened, divided the group's banking activities geographically and transferred the Belgian banking business into state ownership before its sale to BNP Paribas.
