Overview
Blue Arrow Records is an independent record shop and record label based in Cleveland, Ohio. It began as a brick-and-mortar record store in 2009 and later expanded into a label in 2015. The store is known for its wide-ranging selection of vintage vinyl, cassettes, music memorabilia, books, pulp fiction, vintage magazines, rock t-shirts, and vintage posters, housed in a historic mid-century storefront featuring a neon blue arrow. The shop specializes in quality and reasonably priced LPs and 45s from the 1950s to the present, covering jazz, country, classic rock, soul, and rock-n-roll. The owner, Pete, personally renovated the 1300-square-foot space, creating a floor entirely covered with vintage album covers. The label's catalog includes 7-inch vinyl, LPs, CDs, and digital releases. Blue Arrow Records also supports community initiatives such as the Waterloo Alley Cat Project.
History
Blue Arrow Records began as a brick-and-mortar record shop in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2009. The store was founded by Pete, who personally renovated the 1300-square-foot space, creating a floor entirely covered with vintage album covers. The shop quickly became known for its wide-ranging selection of vintage vinyl, cassettes, music memorabilia, books, pulp fiction, vintage magazines, rock t-shirts, and vintage posters, all housed in a historic mid-century storefront complete with a neon blue arrow. In 2015, six years after opening, the store expanded its award-winning operation to include its own record label. The label signed its first artist, Jonathan Richman, in February 2015. Richman, a musician's musician who formed the Modern Lovers in the early 1970s, has continued to write prolifically and tour with drummer Tommy Larkins. The label's first releases in 2015 included Jonathan Richman's singles "O Sun/ Wait Wait" and "Keith/ They Showed Me The Door To Bohemia," as well as the album "Ishkode! Ishkode!" Subsequent releases featured artists such as Bad Luck Jonathan, Ethan Daniel Davidson, Stutter Steps, Part-Time Lover, Will Rigby, and Jesse DeNatale, spanning 7-inch vinyl, LPs, CDs, and digital formats. The label's catalog grew steadily through the late 2010s and into the 2020s, with releases like Jonathan Richman's "SA" (2018) and "Just A Spark On Journey From The Dark" (2021), and Stutter Steps' "Reeling" (2019) and "Lift bw The Bend" (2021). Blue Arrow Records also supports community initiatives, including the Waterloo Alley Cat Project, a volunteer organization helping neighborhood cats and the Waterloo Business District.
