Overview
Bloober Team is a Polish video-game development company headquartered in Kraków. Founded in November 2008 by Piotr Babieno and Piotr Bielatowicz, it began as an independent studio emerging from the broader Nibris development environment and initially operated with about 20 employees. The company’s early work included Music Master: Chopin, a Windows and iOS title created around the bicentenary of Frédéric Chopin’s birth, and Deathmatch Village, a free-to-play multiplayer arena game released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2013. The studio’s early commercial and creative direction was not immediately centered on horror. A significant turning point came with Basement Crawl, a PlayStation 4 launch-period title whose poor reception prompted Bloober Team to rebuild the project extensively. The reworked game, Brawl, retained the basic conceptual foundation but introduced new artwork, mechanics, story elements, and modes; it was made available without additional charge to owners of Basement Crawl. This episode became an example of the company’s willingness to revise a troubled release rather than abandon the underlying idea. Bloober Team subsequently concentrated on atmospheric horror and psychological storytelling. Layers of Fear, released in 2016, established a stronger international identity through its exploration of an unstable painter’s mansion and its emphasis on environmental transformation and unreliable perception. Observer followed in 2017, combining cyberpunk science fiction with psychological horror. Blair Witch, released in 2019 in cooperation with Lionsgate, adapted the Blair Witch property into a first-person horror experience. The Medium, released in 2021, developed the studio’s interest in psychological trauma and divided realities through a dual-reality presentation. The company has also expanded beyond direct development. Bloober Team founded the publishing-related subsidiary Feardemic and established other corporate links within Poland’s game-development sector. It created iFun4all, later renamed Draw Distance, and retained a minority stake after that company’s transition to the NewConnect market. In 2024, Bloober Team established Broken Mirror Games as a subsidiary or co-development-oriented label intended to support projects outside the core studio’s main production structure. Bloober Team received the Paszport Polityki award in the Digital Culture category in January 2018. Its public-company profile also developed over time: after considering acquisition discussions with several parties, the company said in 2021 that it intended to remain independent while pursuing strategic partnerships. Tencent became a significant shareholder in 2021, and Bloober Team later announced a major licensing and distribution agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The company entered the main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange in January 2024. Its international prominence increased through partnerships with major rights holders and platform companies. A strategic relationship with Konami, announced in 2021, led to Bloober Team’s development of the Unreal Engine 5 remake of Silent Hill 2. The remake launched in 2024 for PlayStation 5 and Windows and became one of the studio’s most visible projects. Bloober Team has continued developing original and licensed horror properties, including the Layers of Fear project built with Unreal Engine 5 and Cronos: The New Dawn, an original survival-horror game released in September 2025. The studio’s portfolio therefore spans original intellectual property, licensed adaptations, remakes, publishing, and co-development, with psychological horror remaining its defining positioning.
History
Bloober Team was formally established in Kraków on 6 November 2008 by Piotr Babieno and Piotr Bielatowicz. Its origins were connected to Nibris, a Polish developer founded in 2006. After Nibris withdrew from game development and canceled Sadness, some of its developers joined Bloober Team in 2010. Babieno became the company’s chief executive, and the studio initially operated with approximately 20 employees. The company’s first projects covered several genres. Music Master: Chopin was released for Windows and iOS in connection with the bicentenary of Chopin’s birth and incorporated performances of his music. In 2013, Bloober Team released Deathmatch Village, a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena game for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The game supported cross-play between the two consoles and used three-versus-three arena matches. Basement Crawl, released around the launch of the PlayStation 4, was an important early setback. Its reception was poor, so Bloober Team rebuilt the title with different graphics, mechanics, story content, and game modes. The resulting Brawl was released in February 2015 and received more favorable reviews; owners of Basement Crawl could obtain it without additional payment. The experience preceded a clearer strategic focus on horror and psychologically driven games. Layers of Fear, released in 2016, became the studio’s international breakthrough. Observer followed in 2017, blending cyberpunk themes with psychological horror. In January 2018, Bloober Team received the Paszport Polityki award for Digital Culture. The company announced Project Méliès in March 2018, later revealing it as Layers of Fear 2, published by Gun Media in 2019. Bloober Team then developed Blair Witch, released in 2019, and The Medium, released in 2021. The company also developed a corporate and publishing structure around its studio operations. In 2009 it founded iFun4all, which later became Draw Distance and entered the NewConnect market in 2016. Bloober Team retained 34.98% of Draw Distance after the name change. It also owns the third-party publisher Feardemic. In 2024, it established Broken Mirror Games as a co-development or publishing-oriented subsidiary. Bloober Team considered possible acquisitions or strategic transactions but stated in March 2021 that it intended to remain independent while seeking strategic partnerships. Its relationship with Konami, announced in June 2021, led to the development of Silent Hill 2, a remake produced with Unreal Engine 5. Konami formally announced the project in October 2022. The title was released in 2024 for PlayStation 5 and Windows. Other strategic developments included Tencent becoming a shareholder with 22% of the shares in October 2021 and a significant licensing and distribution agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment announced in 2022. In 2024, Bloober Team announced projects with Skybound Entertainment and Private Division. The Skybound-related Project R became I Hate This Place, while Private Division later canceled the publishing agreement for Project C. Bloober Team subsequently revealed Project C as Cronos: The New Dawn, an original survival-horror game released in September 2025. In 2025, the company also announced another Konami collaboration, later described as a remake of the original Silent Hill.
