Blancco
Data-erasure, mobile-diagnostics and IT asset disposition software brand
Last updated August 26, 2026
Overview
Blancco is a Finland-originated data-security software brand focused on certified data erasure, device diagnostics and the secure reuse or disposition of information-technology assets. Its roots date to Carelian Innovation Ltd., founded in Joensuu in 1997 by Janne Tervo and Kim Väisänen. The company released its first data-erasure product, Blancco Data Cleaner, in 1999 and subsequently developed tools for personal computers, servers, storage systems, mobile devices and large data-center environments. The brand developed within a broader technology-services market in which businesses, governments, telecommunications operators, electronics manufacturers, recyclers and remarketers needed to process used equipment without exposing information left on storage media. Blancco’s software is designed to overwrite or otherwise erase data in accordance with recognized security and compliance requirements, while generating audit evidence that can support internal controls, privacy obligations and asset-resale workflows. This positioning links data protection with circular-economy goals: organizations can confidently reuse, refurbish, resell or recycle hardware instead of destroying it solely because its previous data cannot be verified as removed. Carelian Innovation changed its name to Blancco Oy in 2000. During the following decade, the business expanded beyond basic computer wiping. It introduced products for servers and mass-storage environments, launched Blancco LUN, added management and reporting capabilities, and entered mobile-device erasure with Blancco Mobile. Partnerships and certifications, including a 2007 relationship with Sun Microsystems, inclusion in the NATO Information Assurance Product Catalogue and Common Criteria certification in 2012, helped establish the company as a specialist supplier for security-sensitive deployments. The acquisition of DBAN in 2012 also broadened its data-erasure portfolio. Regenersis plc, a listed British provider of electronics diagnostics, repair and data-erasure services, acquired Blancco Oy in 2014. Regenersis had originated as Fonebank and had built a larger after-market-services business through acquisitions. After combining with Blancco and pursuing a strategic shift toward software and digital security, the group disposed of its original repair division, separated its business activities and adopted the Blancco Technology Group name in 2016. Blancco became the group’s data-erasure business, while SmartChk served as its mobile-diagnostics unit. Blancco’s scope includes software for individual computers and mobile phones as well as enterprise tools for data centers and high-volume processing. Its customers and channel partners include corporations, public-sector organizations, data-center operators, equipment manufacturers, mobile-service companies, IT asset disposition providers, recyclers and electronics remarketers. The brand operates internationally through offices and commercial activity across Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia. Blancco Technology Group was acquired by Francisco Partners on December 5, 2023, in a transaction reported at approximately £175 million. Following the transaction, Blancco continued as the group’s data-erasure and digital-security brand under private ownership. Current public material identifies the wider group as headquartered in Alpharetta, Georgia, while Blancco’s historical operating identity and origins remain associated with Joensuu, Finland.
History
Blancco began in Joensuu, Finland, as Carelian Innovation Ltd., founded in 1997 by Janne Tervo and Kim Väisänen. Its initial business addressed the need to remove information from computers and storage devices before those assets were reused, remarketed or retired. The first product, Blancco Data Cleaner, was released in 1999. In 2000, the company changed its name to Blancco Oy, establishing the Blancco identity that later became the principal brand of a broader digital-security group. During the 2000s, Blancco expanded its technology from individual computer wiping to enterprise and infrastructure use cases. A 2007 partnership with Sun Microsystems supported the delivery of data-erasure capabilities, while the company was also included in the NATO Information Assurance Product Catalogue. In 2008, the Blancco 4.5 client series added server support, and the Data Center Edition was introduced for organizations needing to sanitize drives in large storage environments. These developments targeted customers such as infrastructure vendors, data-center operators and organizations handling large volumes of retired equipment. The company continued broadening its product family in the early 2010s. Blancco LUN was launched in 2011, followed by Blancco Mobile for smartphone erasure in 2012. Blancco 5 and Management Console 3 were also released in 2012, adding broader device coverage and centralized administration or reporting capabilities. The company acquired DBAN in 2012 and obtained Common Criteria certification the same year. Together, these steps strengthened its position in security-conscious markets where customers needed both technical erasure and evidence that the process had been completed. Blancco became part of a larger public technology-services company in 2014, when British-listed Regenersis plc acquired Blancco Oy. Regenersis had evolved from Fonebank and operated in electronics diagnostics, repair and data-erasure services. Its earlier acquisitions included Intec Group in 2005 and Total Repair Solutions in 2009. The Blancco transaction reflected a strategic interest in the growing data-security implications of device reuse and in the expected compliance burden associated with European privacy regulation. After the acquisition, Regenersis reorganized its activities into an after-market-services business and a digital-security business. The company disposed of its original repair division, concentrated more heavily on software and security, and changed its name to Blancco Technology Group in 2016. The resulting group operated two principal businesses: Blancco, focused on data erasure, and SmartChk, focused on mobile diagnostics. Blancco therefore retained its Finnish operating heritage while becoming the central data-erasure brand within an international corporate structure. Blancco’s products serve corporations, governments, equipment manufacturers, telecommunications and electronics companies, data centers, recyclers, refurbishers, remarketers and IT asset disposition providers. Its tools range from software for individual reusable PCs and mobile phones to systems intended for high-volume storage and data-center operations. The common purpose is to make data removal measurable and auditable, helping customers protect confidential information and extend the useful life of hardware. The wider Blancco Technology Group maintained operations across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia and reported a headquarters in Alpharetta, Georgia. On December 5, 2023, Francisco Partners acquired the group in a transaction reported at approximately £175 million. Blancco remains an active brand within the privately owned group, with its identity tied to data erasure, device lifecycle security and IT asset disposition.
