Overview

BlackRock is a United States-based multinational investment-management company headquartered in New York City. Established in 1988, it began as an institutional fixed-income and mortgage-securities manager built around portfolio risk analysis and fiduciary discipline. The founding team included Laurence D. Fink, Robert S. Kapito, Susan Wagner, Barbara Novick, Bennett Golub, Hugh Frater, Ralph Schlosstein, and Keith Anderson, several of whom had previously worked together at First Boston. Fink’s experience with losses in mortgage-backed securities helped shape the company’s emphasis on transparent risk measurement and investment controls. The business was initially associated with Blackstone and operated under an earlier Blackstone-related name before becoming BlackRock Financial Management and later BlackRock. It developed rapidly in the 1990s, grew through institutional mandates and acquisitions, and completed an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 1999 under the ticker BLK. Its business spans public equities, fixed income, multi-asset portfolios, alternatives, cash management, index strategies, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, and advisory services. The company serves pension plans, governments, insurers, foundations, financial institutions, advisers, and individual investors. A central part of BlackRock’s consumer and intermediary presence is iShares, its family of exchange-traded funds. BlackRock obtained iShares through the 2009 acquisition of Barclays Global Investors, a transaction that substantially expanded its index and ETF business. iShares has become one of the company’s most recognizable brands and covers equities, bonds, commodities, factor strategies, sustainable-investment products, and other exposures. BlackRock is commonly grouped with Vanguard, State Street, and Fidelity as one of the largest index-fund managers, although its overall business also includes active and alternative investment strategies. Technology is another defining element of the brand. BlackRock Solutions provides analytical, advisory, and risk-management services, while its Aladdin platform is used to monitor portfolios, model risk, analyze exposures, and support investment workflows. The platform is used internally and licensed or provided to institutional clients and other financial organizations. This combination of asset management and financial technology has helped BlackRock present itself as both an investment manager and an infrastructure provider for capital markets. The company expanded materially through purchases of State Street Research & Management, Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, Quellos’s fund-of-funds business, FutureAdvisor, and other businesses. Its 2009 role in analyzing and valuing troubled assets for the United States Treasury and related institutions during the financial crisis increased its public profile as a provider of market and risk expertise. During the COVID-19 crisis, the Federal Reserve selected BlackRock to manage corporate-credit facilities and related securities purchases. BlackRock has also become an influential participant in debates over corporate governance, environmental, social, and governance considerations, climate risk, fossil-fuel exposure, China-related investments, and the concentration of voting power among major index managers. The company has promoted stewardship and ESG integration, while critics from both political directions have accused it either of advancing political objectives through capital allocation or of continuing to invest in industries and companies associated with climate, defense, and human-rights controversies. Several U.S. states have restricted or divested certain assets because of these disagreements. In the 2020s, BlackRock broadened its presence in digital assets, infrastructure, private markets, and regional partnerships. It launched spot bitcoin and ether-related products after regulatory approvals, introduced a tokenized U.S. Tr…

History

BlackRock was formed in 1988 by a group of investment professionals led by Laurence Fink. Its original business focused on institutional fixed-income management, mortgage-backed securities, and risk analysis. The founders’ experience at First Boston, including a major loss incurred by Fink in the fixed-income business, informed the new firm’s emphasis on portfolio transparency and disciplined risk management. Initial financing came through an association with Blackstone, and the business first operated under a Blackstone-related name. The company became BlackRock Financial Management in the 1990s and expanded quickly through institutional mandates. By the end of 1992 it was managing approximately $17 billion, and by the end of 1994 assets under management had grown to approximately $53 billion. A disagreement over compensation and ownership led Blackstone and BlackRock to separate. BlackRock adopted its present name and continued as an independent growth platform, with Fink as chairman and chief executive. BlackRock went public on the New York Stock Exchange in October 1999. In 2000 it created BlackRock Solutions, combining advisory work with investment analytics and the Aladdin technology platform. The firm then pursued acquisitions, including State Street Research & Management in 2004, Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in 2006, the Quellos fund-of-funds business in 2007, and R3 Capital Management in 2009. It also provided analytical and valuation services connected to distressed assets during the global financial crisis. The defining expansion came through the acquisition of Barclays Global Investors in 2009. The deal brought the iShares ETF business into BlackRock and transformed the company into a leading global provider of index products. Barclays received a significant minority position, while BlackRock gained a much broader retail and intermediary distribution network. BlackRock was added to the S&P 500 in 2011 and continued to grow its institutional, ETF, active-management, alternatives, and technology operations. During the 2010s, the company became increasingly prominent in corporate governance and sustainable-investment discussions. It presented ESG analysis and engagement as components of long-term fiduciary responsibility, while critics questioned its voting influence, fossil-fuel holdings, China exposure, and relationships with companies involved in defense or human-rights controversies. BlackRock also restructured parts of its active-management business and wound down the Global Ascent hedge fund after losses. In the 2020s, BlackRock expanded into digital advice, private markets, infrastructure, regional partnerships, and digital assets. It acquired or invested in businesses and platforms including FutureAdvisor, formed a joint venture with Jio Financial Services, agreed to acquire Global Infrastructure Partners, and introduced products linked to bitcoin, ether, and tokenized Treasury assets. It also advised or managed asset-sale and market-support programs during banking and market crises. The firm’s modern identity rests on four mutually reinforcing activities: managing capital across public and private markets, distributing investment products through iShares and other channels, supplying institutional technology through Aladdin, and exercising or facilitating shareholder stewardship at substantial scale.
