Overview

Black & Red Books is a publishing project based in Detroit that publishes books and pamphlets with an anti-authoritarian perspective. It began in 1968 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and later moved to Detroit, where collaborators established the Detroit Printing Co-op. The press focuses on contemporary and historical attempts to lead principled lives, examining social relations and the coercive restraints of Capital.

History

The Black & Red publishing project began in 1968 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The first publications were in the form of a periodical of which there were 6-1/2 issues. In 1969, some collaborators moved to Detroit and became the nucleus of a group that established the Detroit Printing Co-op a year later. Volunteer printers and helpers produced over twenty Black & Red titles as well as numerous community and radical books and pamphlets. Other texts published in the 1970s reflect the group's interest in historical attempts to loosen the bonds of State power. Concern for the accelerating destruction of Mother Earth led the group to question the widespread belief in Progress.
