History

Bitkom's own story page presents a timeline from 2000 to 2026. In 2025 Bitkom celebrated its 25th anniversary; the digital association said it was looking forward with a new strategy, "Bitkom 2035", positioning Bitkom more strongly as a think tank and trusted advisor and expanding research activities, with the goal of a digitally sovereign Germany in business, state and society. In 2025 Bitkom developed the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which had been collected by the EU Commission until 2022, further monitoring and assessing the digital performance and digitalisation progress of EU member states. In 2025 Bitkom published a transparency report and, by signing the ITZ self-commitment, committed itself to comprehensible structures, clear decision-making processes and open communication toward the public.
