Overview
Bischöfliches Weingut Rüdesheim is a wine estate in the Rheingau, described on its own website as one of the oldest wine estates of the Rheingau with over 900 years of history. Its terroir-driven Rieslings and Spätburgunder mature in a historic monastery cellar from 1683. The estate concentrates on Riesling and Pinot Noir, and its portfolio includes Gutsrieslinge, Ortsrieslinge, Lagenrieslinge, Perl- and Schaumweine, and Pinot Noir Blanc de Noir. It was taken over by the Bistum Limburg in 1984 and has been run as a foundation of the Bishop of Limburg since then, carrying the diocese's coat of arms; in 1996 it was renamed to its current name, Bischöfliches Weingut Rüdesheim.
History
The estate traces its origins to the original parish with vineyards; a first mention appears in the 11th century, though the exact beginnings are lost in the darkness of history. In the 12th century, Engelhard Brömser, a nobleman from Rüdesheim, went on a crusade to the Holy Land. In Saracen captivity he vowed that if he ever returned home alive, he would found a church in Rüdesheim and endow the parish with vineyards. After long years of captivity he returned to the Rhine and fulfilled his promise, presumably expanding the already existing parish wine estate. The resulting Pfarrweingut Rüdesheim survived the storms of the centuries. In 1984 it was taken over by the Bistum Limburg. As a foundation of the Bishop of Limburg it has since carried the diocese's coat of arms. Over time other small parish wine estates were incorporated and further vineyards purchased. Twelve years later, in 1996, the name was changed to today's Bischöfliches Weingut Rüdesheim. The estate is housed in a building complex that is the last wing of the former monastery of Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179).
