Overview

Birkart Globistics air + ocean was the air and ocean freight arm of Birkart Globistics, a German logistics company founded in Aschaffenburg in 1877 by Gabriel Birkart. The business grew from a local transport operation into a nationwide and then international logistics provider, adding its first air freight department in Frankfurt am Main in 1967 and expanding to Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia between 1972 and 1989. In 2000 the owners converted Birkart Globistics into a stock corporation, and in 2002 the company was acquired by Günter Thiel and integrated as a legally independent subsidiary into Thiel Logistik AG. From 2005, Birkart Globistics Air + Ocean served as the specialist unit bundling the air and ocean freight activities of all Thiel subsidiaries. When the Thiel group was renamed Logwin AG in 2008, Birkart was renamed Logwin Air + Ocean Deutschland GmbH and merged with other companies, ending the Birkart brand. At its peak the air and ocean freight business employed around 1,700 people and generated annual revenue of about 380 million euros.

History

Birkart Globistics traces its origins to 1877, when Gabriel Birkart founded a transport company in Aschaffenburg, Germany. In 1901 his son Johann Birkart took over the business. After Johann's death in 1933, his 19-year-old son Hans Birkart assumed management. In 1937 the company, by then operating nationwide, opened its first branch office in Würzburg. After the post-war reconstruction, further locations were added in other German cities. In 1956 Birkart offered international transports to Italy for the first time, and in 1957 it established its first foreign subsidiary in Austria. In 1964 Johann Birkart and Thomas Dachser founded Deutsche Kleiderspedition (DKS) in Aschaffenburg, a specialist in hanging garment transport; Thomas Dachser later sold his shares to Johann Birkart. In 1967 Birkart opened its first air freight department in Frankfurt am Main. During the 1970s the logistics company expanded to other continents: in 1972 it set up its first Asian branch in Hong Kong and its first American branch in Brazil, and in 1976 its first African branch in South Africa. With the founding of a branch in Sydney, Australia, in 1989, Birkart was represented on all continents. In addition to its own branches, the company increased its presence through cooperation partners: in 1986 with the groupage cooperation "System-Gut Logistik Service", in 1998 with the air freight cooperation "Future", and in 1999 with the ocean freight cooperation "Group 99" and subsequently the "Global Container Group". In 2000 the owners converted Birkart Globistics into a stock corporation. The following year Hans-Dieter Birkart, the founder's great-grandson, took over as chairman of the board. In 2002 Günter Thiel bought the company and integrated it as a legally independent firm into his Thiel Logistik AG. In 2003 Hans-Dieter Birkart withdrew from the company. Also in 2002, Delton AG, wholly owned by entrepreneur Stefan Quandt, acquired the majority of Thiel AG shares. In subsequent years the group, after rapid expansion, had to be rescued from impending insolvency. After the crisis the companies were massively restructured. From 2005, Birkart Globistics Air + Ocean functioned as the specialist for air and ocean freight, bundling the previous air and ocean freight activities of all Thiel subsidiaries. Deutsche Kleiderspedition became the legally independent company Thiel FashionLifestyle. In 2008 Thiel AG was renamed Logwin AG. All subsidiaries were also renamed under the new brand, and Birkart became Logwin Air + Ocean Deutschland GmbH. At the time of the 2008 renaming, Birkart stated it had "more than 95" own branches and was represented at "over 200" locations in total. The air and ocean freight business employed around 1,700 people and generated annual revenue of 380 million euros.
