Biotecon Diagnostics GmbH is a German molecular diagnostics company headquartered in Potsdam, near Berlin. It develops and manufactures PCR-based test systems for the detection of foodborne pathogens, spoilage organisms, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), allergens, and animal species. Biotecon Diagnostics GmbH was founded in 1998 in Potsdam, Germany, as a spin-off from academic research in molecular biology. Biotecon established itself as a recognized specialist in the European food diagnostics market, serving customers in the food and beverage industry, contract testing laboratories, and government agencies. Its products were distributed internationally through a network of partners. In 2017, Biotecon Diagnostics was acquired by Hygiena, LLC, a US-based company headquartered in Camarillo, California, that provides rapid microbial detection and monitoring solutions, including ATP monitoring systems and ELISA-based tests. The acquisition was part of Hygiena's strategy to expand its molecular diagnostics capabilities and its presence in Europe. Following the acquisition, Biotecon continued to operate from Potsdam as a subsidiary of Hygiena, and its foodproof® and RoboPrep® product lines were integrated into Hygiena's broader food safety portfolio. Under Hygiena ownership, Biotecon has contributed to the development of new PCR-based tests and has benefited from Hygiena's global distribution network, which includes affiliate offices in multiple countries and over 180 distributors worldwide. The company remains active in research and development for molecular food safety testing, supporting Hygiena's One Health Diagnostics® approach that spans the food production chain from farm to fork.
