Overview
BioSpring is a nucleic acid contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. Founded in 1997 by Dr. Sylvia Wojczewski and Dr. Hüseyin Aygün, the company manufactures and analyzes oligonucleotides including mRNA, siRNA, guide RNA, ASO and other oligonucleotides, serving pharmaceutical and biotech companies and academic institutions worldwide. It operates a subsidiary in the United States and a local partner in Japan, and employs over 500 people.
History
BioSpring was founded in 1997 by Dr. Sylvia Wojczewski and Dr. Hüseyin Aygün, then students at Goethe University in Frankfurt, who purchased a DNA synthesizer and began operations in a small lab under the mentorship of Professor Joachim Engels. The company relocated to Frankfurt-Fechenheim in 2000 and began large-scale manufacturing in 2001. In 2007, BioSpring became the first European oligonucleotide manufacturer to receive cGMP certification for the manufacturing of therapeutic oligonucleotides. In 2013, it implemented the world's first Next Generation OligoProcess Synthesizer, and in 2016 it passed its first FDA inspection. In 2022, BioSpring expanded into non-GMP mRNA manufacturing, followed by achieving cGMP certification for mRNA manufacturing in 2024. To date, BioSpring has provided support for ten commercially launched oligonucleotide therapeutics. The company has a subsidiary in the U.S. and a partnership in Japan, and describes itself as Europe's largest manufacturer of synthetic DNA and RNA and the world leader in guide RNA products. Its expansion plans include a new campus in Offenbach.
