Overview

Biosphere Corporation is a Ukrainian consumer-products company headquartered in Dnipro. Founded in 1997 by Andriy Zdesenko, it began as a distributor of international hygiene brands, including Kotex, Huggies, Libresse, Bella and Nichols, before developing its own manufacturing base and proprietary brand portfolio. The company has since combined brand ownership, contract and private-label production, distribution, recycling and export activities. Its portfolio includes proprietary brands such as Freken BOK, Smile, PRO service, Novita, Vortex, Superfresh, LikeIt and Bambik, together with distributed brands including Selpak, Tork and Lifestyles. The product range covers household bags and films, cleaning and kitchen accessories, paper and hygiene goods, wet wipes, cotton products, professional away-from-home supplies, baby products, pet-care products and environmentally oriented alternatives. The company has also developed private-label projects for other businesses. Biosphere’s manufacturing network includes four plants. The KPD facility in Dnipro, opened in 2002, is described as the corporation’s first and largest factory. In 2008, the Thermoplast production and logistics complex opened in Letychiv in Khmelnytskyi region. The company opened the Polygreen polyethylene recycling plant in Fastiv in 2014; its stated processing capacity is approximately 800 tons of polyethylene waste per month. In 2015, Biosphere established a joint venture with France’s Groupe Lemoine and began cotton-product production in Estonia for European markets. The Estonian facility is reported to process about 20 tons of cotton daily. Environmental products have become an important part of the company’s development. Biosphere produced what it describes as Ukraine’s first fully biodegradable bags and launched the Go Green initiative, which brings together biodegradable, compostable, organic and reusable products. In 2020, it began production of fully biodegradable and compostable garbage bags in Ukraine. The company has also promoted recycled-polyethylene bags, organic cotton products, washable wet-toilet-paper alternatives and damp cotton cloth napkins. The corporation expanded beyond traditional household products through professional supplies, licensed children’s cosmetics, diapers and pet care. Its PRO service brand entered the professional goods segment in 2010, while Smile introduced a Disney-licensed baby cosmetics line in 2018. LikeIt was created for pet-care products in 2019, and Bambik became the first brand in Biosphere’s own diaper line after in-house diaper production began in 2020. Biosphere has reported international expansion across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. It entered additional export markets in 2020, including the United Kingdom, United States, Israel, Switzerland, Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Tanzania, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The company has also been associated with environmental and charitable initiatives, including World Cleanup Day, plogging events, children’s charity programs and medical support during the COVID-19 pandemic. The corporation has appeared in Ukrainian brand rankings, entering the country’s top 100 most valuable brands from 2018. By 2019, three of its brands were reported among that group. Biosphere remains an active Ukrainian manufacturer and distributor, although its operations have been affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In April 2025, a missile strike on Dnipro destroyed one of the corporation’s warehouses, killed an employee and caused a fire covering approximately 6,000 square metres.

History

Biosphere Corporation was established in Ukraine in 1997 by Andriy Zdesenko. Its initial business was distribution rather than manufacturing: the company represented international hygiene brands such as Kotex, Huggies, Libresse, Bella and Nichols. This distribution foundation gave Biosphere access to Ukrainian household and personal-care channels before it began building proprietary brands and factories. The company created Freken BOK, its own household-products and cooking-accessories brand, in 2001. In 2002, it opened the KPD facility in Dnipro, described as its first and largest plant. This marked the transition from a primarily distributive business toward a manufacturing and brand-management group. In 2007, Biosphere began implementing private-label projects for other brands, adding contract and customized production to its own-brand operations. A major expansion of the production network followed in 2008 with the opening of the Thermoplast production and logistics complex in Letychiv, Khmelnytskyi region. In 2010, Biosphere created the Vortex trademark and launched Biosphere Professional, also known as PRO service, for professional and away-from-home customers. The company opened its own wet-wipes production during the same year. From 2012 onward, the company’s facilities underwent annual audits by Walt Disney and Universal, reflecting its work with licensed products and international quality requirements. Biosphere expanded into waste processing in 2014 by opening the Polygreen recycling plant in Fastiv. The facility is reported to process approximately 800 tons of polyethylene waste each month and became a significant part of the corporation’s integration of manufacturing with recycling. In 2015, Biosphere formed a joint venture with Groupe Lemoine of France and launched advanced cotton-products production in Estonia. The Estonian operation was intended to serve European markets and is reported to have capacity for approximately 20 tons of cotton processing per day. The company broadened its consumer portfolio during the late 2010s. In August 2018, it introduced a Smile baby cosmetics line licensed by The Walt Disney Company. It also began active expansion in Scandinavia, the Baltic states and Poland. In 2019, Biosphere created LikeIt, a proprietary pet-care brand. By this period, the corporation was being recognized in Ukrainian brand rankings: it was reported among the country’s 100 most valuable brands from 2018, and three of its brands were listed in the top 100 in 2019. Environmental positioning became more prominent through the Go Green project. Biosphere produced fully biodegradable bags and, in January 2020, began Ukraine’s first reported production of fully biodegradable and compostable garbage bags. The broader initiative included biodegradable and organic products, organic cotton sheets, reusable or washable alternatives to certain disposable products and damp cotton cloth napkins. The company also maintained a major recycling operation through Polygreen and promoted bags made from recycled polyethylene. In 2020, Biosphere expanded into diapers with its own production and launched Bambik as the first brand in that category. The same year saw a wider export push, with reported shipments to England, the United States, Israel, Switzerland, Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Tanzania, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. These activities complemented the company’s existing distribution of international brands and its expansion across European markets. Biosphere has also pursued social and environmental initiatives. In 2018, it became a general partner of World Cleanup Day and volunteered 175,000 bags made from fully recycled polyethylene. It organized Ukraine’s first reported plogging event in Dnipro in May 2018, with subsequent events in Kyiv, Lviv and Minsk. The corporation has supported children’s charity festivals and worked with charitable foundations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it collaborated with Ukrainian doctors on respiratory-support bags for critically ill patients and distributed them to hospitals without charge. The corporation’s operations have faced wartime damage. In April 2025, a missile attack on Dnipro directly hit one of its warehouses, destroying it and causing a fire covering about 6,000 square metres. One Biosphere employee was killed. The available reference material does not establish the longer-term operational or financial consequences of the incident. Biosphere is otherwise described as an active Ukrainian manufacturer and distributor with four plants, proprietary and distributed brands, recycling capabilities and international export activity.
