Overview

Binyl Records (stylized as binyl records, Japanese: ヴァイナル レコーズ) was a Japanese record label dedicated primarily to rock music, established on January 1, 2006, within Avex Entertainment Inc. as part of the company's push to develop rock music. The label's name is a play on the English phrase "vinyl records," with the "v" changed to "b" to represent the "B-side" to Avex's "A-side." It launched the major-label careers of acts such as MONKEY MAJIK and C-999, and later saw Jackson vibe transfer to the label in 2007 and KAT make their major debut. On April 1, 2009, Avex Entertainment established Vinyl Records Co., Ltd. (ヴァイナル レコーズ株式会社, abbreviated BRI within the group) as a wholly owned subsidiary through a company split, to take over the label operations. The company aimed to handle music across various genres beyond rock and also planned to expand into artist management. However, due to the harsh conditions of the music market, continuing as an independent legal entity was deemed difficult, and the company was merged back into its parent Avex Entertainment on October 1, 2011. After the absorption, the Binyl Records label continued under Avex Entertainment. In April 2019, MONKEY MAJIK, the last remaining act on the label, transferred to A.S.A.B, a new label established within Avex Entertainment that same month, effectively bringing Binyl Records to an end. The label is now defunct.

History

Binyl Records was established on January 1, 2006, within Avex Entertainment Inc. as a label dedicated to rock music, reflecting the company's intention to develop rock music internally. Prior to this, the division had operated as the 6th Production Section of the 1st Production Department since before 2005. The label's name derives from the English term "vinyl records," with the initial "v" replaced by "b" to symbolize aiming for the "B-side" relative to Avex as the "A-side." The label launched the major debuts of MONKEY MAJIK and C-999. In 2007, Jackson vibe transferred to the label, and KAT made their major debut. On April 1, 2009, Avex Entertainment established Vinyl Records Co., Ltd. (ヴァイナル レコーズ株式会社) as a wholly owned subsidiary via a company split (new establishment split), succeeding the business of the label binyl records, which had been handled by the 3rd Production Section of the 1st Production Department of Avex Entertainment's Music Business Division. The group abbreviation was BRI. The new company intended to handle music in various fields beyond rock and also to engage in management. However, due to the severe music market, it was judged difficult to continue business as an independent corporation, and on October 1, 2011, it was merged into its parent company, Avex Entertainment Inc. At the end of 2009, an indie label called POPTOP was established. After the merger, the Binyl Records label continued under Avex Entertainment. In April 2019, MONKEY MAJIK, the last act remaining on the label, transferred to A.S.A.B, a new record label established within Avex Entertainment that same month, effectively bringing Binyl Records to an end. The label is now defunct.
