Overview

Bibliothèque québécoise (BQ) is an independent Quebec publishing house founded in 1988 by three established French-language publishers: Fides, Leméac and Hurtubise HMH. Its original mission was to create a dedicated space for the defence and illustration of Quebec literature, notably by reissuing in pocket format works that had previously appeared with the founding houses and elsewhere. The collection Bibliothèque québécoise at Fides was chosen to bring together the three publishers' backlists, and the new entity was established as an independent company held in equal shares by the three partners. BQ's catalogue has grown to more than 350 titles and is organized around categories such as Contemporains d'hier, Classiques de demain, Roman, Essai, Poésie et théâtre, and Nouvelles et contes. It publishes the best of Quebec literature alongside Canadian-English works in French translation, and it has become a reference collection for several generations of readers while continuing to innovate. Recent titles highlighted on its website include works by Michel Rochon, Laurent Lussier, Akim Gagnon, Hubert Aquin, J.D. Kurtness, Nicholas Dawson and Jean-Christophe Réhel. BQ also offers digital editions in EPUB and PDF formats. Following the bankruptcy and acquisition of Fides in 2010, Fides ceased to be involved in BQ, and management passed to the two remaining houses, Leméac and Hurtubise. The offices were transferred to Leméac. BQ remains an active independent publisher in Montreal, Quebec, and continues to serve the francophone literary market through its catalogue, its website and its newsletter.

History

Bibliothèque québécoise was founded in 1988 by three Quebec publishing houses: Fides, Leméac and Hurtubise HMH. They decided to unite to create a new publishing house with the objective of creating a place dedicated to the defence and illustration of Quebec literature. This new literary entity specialized in reissuing in pocket format works that had appeared with the three publishers and from elsewhere. Among its goals were to secure a common editorial and commercial force, to achieve quality press results for the format, and to keep alive works published in the past. The collection Bibliothèque québécoise at Fides was chosen to bring together the three publishers' backlists and to be the heart of the new entity, which became an independent company held in equal shares by the three houses. In 2010, following its bankruptcy and acquisition, Fides ceased to be involved and left management to the two other publishing houses; the offices were transferred to Leméac. By 2012, the publisher had reached two thousand titles, according to Le Devoir, and in 2018 it celebrated its 30th anniversary. Its catalogue now numbers more than 350 titles and remains a reference collection as well as a source of innovation for the literature of yesterday and today.
