Overview

Bharat Forge Limited is an Indian multinational engineering and manufacturing company and the flagship enterprise of the Kalyani Group. Established in Pune on 19 June 1961 by Nilkanthrao A. Kalyani, the company began as a forging manufacturer and developed into a diversified supplier serving automotive, commercial vehicle, industrial, energy, construction, mining, railway, marine, aerospace, and defence markets. Its traditional business is based on large-scale metal forging and precision machining. Core products include front axle beams, steering knuckles, connecting rods, crankshafts, and other structural or powertrain components. The company supplies vehicle manufacturers and global component groups, including major international customers in the Daimler, Volkswagen, Meritor, and Dana ecosystems. Its capabilities cover design, forging, heat treatment, machining, testing, and systems integration, allowing it to participate in higher-value engineering programs rather than functioning only as a commodity forge. Bharat Forge expanded beyond automotive components as the cyclical nature of the commercial-vehicle market created a need for broader industrial exposure. Its diversification has included oil and gas, infrastructure, marine, railways, energy equipment, aerospace, and defence. The company has also pursued lightweight materials and international manufacturing capacity as part of its effort to reduce dependence on a single vehicle segment and to participate in global supply chains. The company operates manufacturing facilities in India, including sites at Mundhwa, Satara, Baramati, and Chakan, and has European forging operations such as Bharat Forge Kilsta in Sweden, Bharat Forge CDP in Germany, and BF Aluminiumtechnik. Its Pune-area industrial presence also includes the Khed City special economic zone, a large development associated with the Kalyani Group. Defence has become an important strategic area through Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited and related partnerships. These activities include artillery systems, protected vehicles, armoured-vehicle upgrades, ammunition, missiles, air-defence systems, remote weapon systems, and other subsystems for Indian and export customers. Bharat Forge has also participated in defence joint ventures, including Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and has sought capabilities in marine propulsion and other specialised equipment. The company has used acquisitions and partnerships to broaden its technology and geographic reach. In October 2024, it acquired AAM India Manufacturing, a subsidiary of American Axle & Manufacturing, for a reported consideration of ₹544.5 crore. The transaction strengthened its automotive component portfolio and manufacturing footprint in India. Bharat Forge remains an active industrial group whose identity combines high-volume forging, precision engineering, global automotive supply, and a growing defence and advanced-manufacturing business.

History

Bharat Forge was founded in Pune on 19 June 1961 by Nilkanthrao A. Kalyani. It was the first company promoted by the Kalyani Group and became the group's flagship enterprise. The company's original foundation was forging, a process in which heated metal is shaped under pressure to produce strong components for vehicles and industrial machinery. Over time, Bharat Forge added machining, heat treatment, testing, and engineering capabilities, enabling it to supply finished or near-finished components to global manufacturers. Automotive manufacturing became the company's principal growth engine. Bharat Forge developed a broad portfolio of commercial-vehicle and passenger-vehicle components, including front axle beams, steering knuckles, connecting rods, and crankshafts. Its customer base expanded beyond India as vehicle manufacturers and major component suppliers sought globally competitive forging capacity. The company established or acquired operations in Europe, including Bharat Forge Kilsta in Sweden, Bharat Forge CDP in Germany, and BF Aluminiumtechnik, supporting its position in international automotive supply chains. Bharat Forge subsequently pursued diversification to manage exposure to automotive cycles and to use its metallurgical and manufacturing expertise in adjacent fields. Its activities came to include industrial equipment, energy, oil and gas, infrastructure, railways, marine applications, aerospace, and defence. Lightweight materials became a stated strategic priority, reflecting the need for lower vehicle weight and improved efficiency. The company also developed a significant Indian manufacturing network, with forging and machining operations at Mundhwa, Satara, Baramati, and Chakan. The company has participated in major industrial partnerships. Its former power-equipment joint venture with Alstom, later affected by General Electric's acquisition of Alstom's energy business, manufactured and supplied large steam-turbine and generator equipment. Bharat Forge approved its withdrawal from that venture in 2016 and completed the divestment of its remaining interests by 2018. Earlier, the company's investment and windmill divisions had been separated into BF Utilities Limited in 2000. Defence became a major area of strategic development through Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited, which supplies systems and subsystems to the Indian armed forces and export markets. Its portfolio has included artillery, protected vehicles, armoured-vehicle upgrades, ammunition, missiles, air-defence solutions, and unmanned systems. In 2015, Kalyani Strategic Systems established Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The Hyderabad facility was intended to manufacture advanced defence products and later became associated with production of systems including Spice 2000 bombs and medium-range surface-to-air missiles. Bharat Forge has also pursued marine-propulsion capabilities. Kalyani Strategic Systems acquired a majority interest in Zorya Mashproekt India Private Limited through an agreement signed in 2023, with completion reported at the end of that year. The move was connected with efforts to develop Indian sources for marine gas-turbine equipment and related naval applications. In October 2024, Bharat Forge acquired AAM India Manufacturing from American Axle & Manufacturing. The transaction further broadened its Indian automotive component platform. Today, Bharat Forge combines large-scale forging, precision machining, global automotive supply, lightweight-material development, and defence engineering. It remains headquartered in Pune and continues to operate as the leading company of the Kalyani Group.
