Overview
BH Entertainment is a South Korean entertainment agency best known for managing actors and actresses working in Korean film, television, streaming, advertising, and international markets. The company was established in 2006 by actor Lee Byung-hun and his long-time manager Son Seok-woo. It began essentially as a dedicated management operation for Lee, whose popularity had expanded beyond South Korea, particularly in Japan and other parts of Asia. The agency was designed to give him greater control over domestic and overseas career decisions after his earlier management arrangement ended. The company expanded beyond its founding artist in 2007, when Korean-American actress and model Ursula Mayes became its first additional artist. In 2008, BH Entertainment merged with Byulnan Actors, bringing several established performers into its roster and creating a broader actor-management business. During the late 2000s and early 2010s, the agency strengthened its position by signing artists such as Kim Min-hee, Han Hyo-joo, Han Ga-in, Han Ji-min, and Ahn So-hee, while also representing actors including Jin Goo and Bae Soo-bin. Its management philosophy was described as selective and customized, with the company emphasizing individualized career support rather than maintaining an excessively large roster. BH Entertainment also moved into production and related entertainment activities. In 2012 it announced a stage adaptation of Lee Byung-hun's film Masquerade, which opened in Seoul in 2013 and represented the company's first production project. In 2017, it began a more explicit international expansion by signing Chinese actor Yu Xiaoguang and Japanese actress Erika Karata. That year it also entered a content-production agreement with Sony Pictures Television covering potential remakes, original drama development, and collaboration across the United States and Asia. Kakao became an important corporate partner in the next phase of the company's development. Kakao M announced the acquisition of a 30 percent stake in June 2018 and completed the purchase of BH Entertainment by January 2019. Following the 2021 merger of Kakao M and KakaoPage into Kakao Entertainment, BH Entertainment operated as a subsidiary within Kakao Entertainment's M Company division. The relationship placed the agency within a larger entertainment ecosystem spanning artist management, audiovisual production, music, web content, and distribution. The company continued to invest in its operating base and production capabilities. In 2019 it announced the purchase of an office building in Seoul's Nonhyeon-dong area, financed in part through a paid-in capital increase and a capital injection from Kakao M. In the 2020s, BH Entertainment participated in screen production, including co-production of the Netflix series Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area in 2022 and the film Concrete Utopia in 2023. Its public identity remains centered on actor representation, although its activities extend into production partnerships and international content development.
History
Before BH Entertainment was created, Lee Byung-hun was represented by Player Entertainment. After Player Entertainment was acquired by Phantom Entertainment Group in 2005, Lee's management was transferred to the acquiring group. His growing popularity in Asian markets, especially Japan, made international coordination an important part of his career, but reports described dissatisfaction with the way his domestic and overseas activities were being handled. As his exclusive arrangement with Phantom approached its end, Lee decided to establish a more independent management structure. In 2006, Lee founded BH Entertainment with Son Seok-woo, a manager who had worked with him since 2001 and had previously been a director at Player Entertainment. Son became chief executive, while the initial team included accounting, marketing, public-relations, domestic and international agents, and field-management staff. The business initially functioned as a one-artist agency centered on Lee. Its name was derived from Lee's initials and later became associated with the phrase “Be Happy.” By early 2007, after Lee's prior contract expired, his activities were being handled through BH Entertainment. Ursula Mayes signed later in 2007 as the agency's first additional artist, representing the beginning of its expansion into broader talent management. In 2008, BH Entertainment merged with Byulnan Actors. The transaction brought additional performers, including Han Chae-young, Jin Goo, and Bae Soo-bin, and increased the number of managed celebrities to roughly ten. The company continued recruiting and scouting actors while using the success of its roster to establish a reputation as a premium Korean agency. In 2009, it signed Kim Min-hee and Han Hyo-joo, strengthening its position among agencies representing established and rising screen performers. During the early 2010s, Son Seok-woo described the company's approach as highly individualized. BH Entertainment sought to limit the size of its roster so it could tailor management to each artist's career objectives. The company also formalized outside business relationships, including a legal-advisory agreement announced with Apex Law Firm in 2011. In 2012 it announced a stage adaptation of Masquerade, the film associated with its founder, and the production opened in Seoul in February 2013. This was the company's first reported move into stage production. Around the same period, it signed Han Ga-in, Han Ji-min, and Ahn So-hee, among other notable performers. The middle of the decade brought both roster turnover and strategic pressure. Several artists, including Han Chae-young, Go Soo, Kim Min-hee, and Ahn So-hee, left when their contracts expired, prompting public discussion about BH Entertainment's ability to retain major talent. The agency continued to represent important performers such as Han Hyo-joo, Han Ga-in, and Han Ji-min, and some former artists, including Go Soo and Ahn So-hee, later returned. These developments reflected the fluid nature of South Korean talent-agency contracts rather than a documented change in the company's core actor-management model. In 2017, BH Entertainment began a more deliberate international expansion. Yu Xiaoguang became its first Chinese artist and Erika Karata its first Japanese artist. The agency also signed a content-production agreement with Sony Pictures Television for the United States and Asia. The proposed collaboration covered cross-border remakes and original drama development, signaling an ambition to move beyond representation into international content businesses. Kakao's investment marked the next major corporate turning point. Kakao M announced the purchase of a 30 percent stake on June 27, 2018, and completed the full acquisition by January 2019. Later in 2019, BH Entertainment announced plans to purchase a headquarters building in Seoul's Nonhyeon-dong district. The transaction was supported by a paid-in capital increase, with Kakao M providing capital for facility-related funding. In 2021, the merger of Kakao M and KakaoPage created Kakao Entertainment, and BH Entertainment became part of that larger company's M Company division. The agency subsequently participated in screen production. In 2022 it co-produced the Netflix series Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area with Zium Content, now known as High-Zium Studio. In 2023 it co-produced the film Concrete Utopia with Climax Studio. BH Entertainment therefore developed from a founder-centered actor agency into a Kakao-affiliated entertainment company combining talent management with selected stage, film, television, streaming, and international production activities.
