Overview
BGI Precision Nutrition (Shenzhen) Technology Co., Ltd. — trading as 华大营养 (BGI Nutrition) — is a Shenzhen-based subsidiary of BGI Group dedicated to human commensal-microbiome research and gut-health management. According to its official website, the platform has focused on human commensal bacteria for 18 years and positions itself as a force spanning science, technology and industry in that field. It draws on BGI Group's research and technology in the human microbiome and on a large culture collection of more than 70,000 human commensal strains, and it has produced over 200 high-level research outputs. The company builds an integrated service system that runs from human micro-ecology testing, through probiotic balance and maintenance, to nutrition and health management, aiming to create a closed loop of production, learning, research and application. Its consumer-facing product line is sold mainly under the Umeta (优美达) probiotic brand, with products such as Umeta Yichang (益畅) probiotic tablet candy for basic gut regularity, Umeta Yijian (益健) probiotic solid beverage for self-protection, Umeta Changqing (畅青) with four Bifidobacterium strains, Umeta Yijing (益净), Umeta Yishu (益舒) for stomach comfort, and Umeta Yixiu (益休) for rest and sleep. The website organizes services around gut management, weight management, skin management and testing services. BGI Nutrition was established in 2016, when BGI created the Umeta probiotic brand to develop probiotics suited to Chinese bodies through in-house research. Its history is tied to BGI's earlier microbiome work: participation as the only non-EU organization in the MetaHIT project in 2008, the founding of a key laboratory for human commensal microorganisms in 2009, and the 2010 Nature cover publication of human gut microbiome genome research that accompanied the building of a human commensal bacteria biobank. The first BGI probiotic product, Yichang, appeared in 2015. In recent years the company has emphasized a "precision nutrition" positioning. In 2025 it released Yiwelfang (益微方), described as the world's first personalized probiotic based on metagenomic gut-microbiome testing, and in 2026 it launched "益人益方" personalized nutrients driven by multi-omics and AI. It has also pursued partnerships and channel expansion, including a deep collaboration with JD Health for an exclusive full-chain precision-probiotic health-management service, and it has publicly warned consumers about counterfeit products and unauthorized sales channels. The company claims consecutive years as China's top-selling domestic probiotic brand and has received recognition including high-tech enterprise status, specialized and sophisticated SME designation, and Shenzhen brand awards.
History
BGI Nutrition's history is rooted in BGI Group's early work on the human microbiome. In 2008, BGI participated as the only non-EU organization in the MetaHIT project, a major international effort to catalogue the human gut microbiome. In 2009 it established a key laboratory for human commensal microorganisms to carry out functional strain research. In 2010, Nature published human gut microbiome genome research as a cover article, and BGI built a human commensal bacteria biobank that the company says now holds more than 70,000 strains. These years (2008–2014) established the scientific foundation on which the later consumer business would rest. In 2015, BGI launched its first probiotic product, Yichang (益畅), aimed at basic gut problems. In 2016, BGI Nutrition was formally established and created the probiotic brand Umeta (优美达), with the goal of developing probiotics suited to Chinese bodies through independent research. In 2017, strains used in Umeta Yichang, Yidong and other products took part in a national "13th Five-Year" key R&D program, and the company became a member of the Guangdong Food Safety Society. In 2018 it supported the "daily vitamin plan" for children in Ali, Tibet. In 2019 it was recognized as one of the top ten innovative enterprises in the probiotic industry and as a trusted brand in the big-health industry. During 2020–2024 the company combined public-health contributions with commercial growth. In 2020 it donated probiotics to support epidemic prevention, including to Shenzhen Third People's Hospital and BGI's Huoyan teams. In 2022 it was certified as a high-tech enterprise and its brand market size exceeded the hundred-million-yuan level. In 2023, BGI Umeta became a strategic partner of the "Good Products China" national independent-brand action plan, received JD Health's "Guohuo Zhiguang" (Light of Domestic Products) title, was designated a specialized and sophisticated SME, and made charitable donations for the diagnosis and treatment of ALS patients. In 2024 it received a China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Award. In 2025–2026 the company pushed further into precision nutrition. In 2025 it received the Gut Health Conference's "2023–2025 Probiotic Strength Enterprise" honor, was selected for the Great Country Brand Preferred Project, obtained certification as China's top-selling domestic probiotic brand for three consecutive years, and released Yiwelfang (益微方), described as the world's first personalized probiotic based on metagenomic gut-microbiome testing. In 2026 it was named among the fourth Shenzhen Top 100 Brands, won a first prize at the 17th China General Chamber of Commerce Service Industry Science and Technology Innovation Awards, and obtained dual certification as China's top-selling domestic probiotic brand for four consecutive years and first in repurchase rate for three consecutive years. It also launched "益人益方" personalized nutrients and deepened its collaboration with JD Health, while publicly warning consumers about counterfeit products and unauthorized channels.
