History

BF1 TV was created in 2004 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and officially began broadcasting its programmes on Wednesday 18 August 2010. It thus became the first private television channel in Burkina Faso. At launch it used a yellow-and-gold logo and the slogan "La télé qui ose" ("The TV that dares"), and it was accessible via a terrestrial hertzian network at 575.25 over a 45 km radius around Kadiogo province, covering seven towns: Ouagadougou, Tangin Dassouri, Komki-Ipala, Koubri, Saaba, Pabré and Komsilga. In 2013, with a 12.9% audience share, BF1 was officially recognised as the leading private television channel in Burkina Faso by the Conseil Supérieur de la Communication (CSC). That same year, Issoufou Saré took over as director-general, succeeding Léopold Zimapi Kohoun, and Aïssata Sankara became editor-in-chief; the new management pushed a new editorial dynamic. From 2014, several changes took place. The channel's graphic identity shifted from yellow-and-gold to red-and-white with a new logo, and its slogan became "La chaîne au cœur de nos défis" ("The channel at the heart of our challenges"). Its geographic coverage expanded through additional distribution channels, notably Canal+, Nerwaya Multivision and DSK TV. In 2015, the channel opened a base in Bobo-Dioulasso run by a regional management, making it accessible via hertzian network over a 45 km radius around Houet province. In 2017–2018, BF1 positioned itself as the leading Burkinabè private television channel with the highest cumulative audience rate. In 2019, it was ranked first in television audience with an 18.1% audience share, and it maintained that position until 2021 according to the audience-measurement body Afrikascope. In 2021, a study conducted by the national institute of statistics and demography placed BF1 first in audience in urban centres. The channel's own presentation states that it has been at the top of private audiences since 2018 and that it has more than 5 million active subscribers/followers. BF1 TV belongs to the press group Global Communication. Its headquarters are in the Ouaga 2000 district of Ouagadougou, at the intersection of Avenue Pascal Zagré and Boulevard Mouammar Kadhafi, and it also has a representation in the Accart-Ville district, sector 09, of Bobo-Dioulasso. The channel is available locally and internationally via satellite on channel 251 of the Canal+ package, via DTT and over the internet. Its programming covers the main interests of Burkinabè viewers, with particular emphasis on education, the economy, politics and entrepreneurship, and it aims to be close to the population and especially to young people, its main target.
