Overview
The Beuroner Kunstverlag is a German publishing house rooted in the Benedictine Beuron Archabbey in Beuron, Germany. It traces its origins to the Beuron Art School (Beuroner Kunstschule), founded in the second half of the 19th century by a group of artist-monks who sought to give expression to Christian faith through a distinctive style of sacred art. In 1898, the monks established the Verlag der Beuroner Kunstschule (Publishing House of the Beuron Art School) to spread their art and its theological meaning beyond the monastery walls. The venture was renamed Beuroner Kunstverlag in 1934. Early production used a foot-operated Phoenix Tiegel printing press to create cards, small pictures, certificates, and sheets with prayer texts, as well as the publisher's first book. The first catalogue was distributed not only in Germany but across Europe and even to the United States. Within a few years, the press was producing several hundred thousand prints annually. Today the Beuroner Kunstverlag operates as a modern media company and is a member of the Katholischer Medienverband (Catholic Media Association). It sells its goods through its online shop at klosterkunst.de, which offers art cards featuring the works of contemporary artist Andreas Felger, monastery products such as Beuroner Feiertagstee (holiday tea), calendula and lavender creams, apple balsamic vinegars, and spelt nougat waffles. The publishing programme combines the high monastery art of past eras with the colourful forms of modern artists and innovative ideas. The publishing director is P. Mauritius Sauerzapf OSB, with Joachim Schlude responsible for sales and marketing and Daniel Faschian handling production, prepress, digital printing, order processing, invoicing, customer advice, and subscription management.
History
The Beuroner Kunstverlag began with a vision to give expression to Christian faith. In the second half of the 19th century, a group of artist-monks at the Benedictine Beuron Archabbey founded the Beuron Art School (Beuroner Kunstschule), which soon became known beyond the monastery's borders. The Benedictines wanted to carry their self-developed art and its theological significance out into the world. From this missionary impulse, the Verlag der Beuroner Kunstschule (Publishing House of the Beuron Art School) was founded in 1898. In 1934 it was renamed Beuroner Kunstverlag. Early printing was done on a foot-operated Phoenix Tiegel printing press, producing cards, small pictures, certificates, and sheets with prayer texts. A first book was also created. The publisher's first catalogue was sent not only throughout Germany but across Europe and even to the United States. Within a few years, several hundred thousand prints were being distributed annually. Today the Beuroner Kunstverlag is a modern media company and a member of the Katholischer Medienverband (Catholic Media Association). It distributes its goods among other channels via www.klosterkunst.de. For publishing director P. Mauritius Sauerzapf OSB, tradition and modernity are not a contradiction. On the contrary, the publishing programme is shaped by the high monastery art of past days, by the colourful colours and forms of modern artists, and by many innovative ideas. This is certainly one reason for the large number of enthusiastic customers.
