Overview

Betti Editrice is an Italian publishing house based in Siena, founded in 1992 as a spin-off from a small family-run photography business established in 1957 by Giancarlo Betti. The company has since focused on publishing, with the primary goal of promoting the Tuscan and especially Sienese territory. Its first publication was Pallium, a photographic book collecting images of all the drappelloni (banners) of the Palio di Siena from 1945 to 1969, followed by four more volumes covering the banners from the origins of the Palio up to 2007. Over the years, its catalogue has expanded to include historical, social, touristic, and anthropological essays, poetry and sonnet collections, art exhibition catalogues, photographic books, and fiction. It pays particular attention to young readers with series such as Betti Junior, promoting discovery of the Tuscan territory and artistic heritage. In 2017, the publishing house created the Premio Letterario Via Francigena, with the patronage of the Municipality of Monteriggioni and the European Association of Via Francigena Ways (AEVF). In 2021, it began collaborating with the cultural association "I libri di Mompracem" in Florence to co-edit books proposed by the association. In 2023, it published its thousandth book, Siena. Così per ridere by Emilio Giannelli. The company remains a private, family-linked publishing brand deeply rooted in Sienese cultural identity.

History

Betti Editrice was founded in Siena in 1992 as a spin-off from a small family-run photography business originally established in 1957 by Giancarlo Betti, who passed away in 2020. The company that manages the brand subsequently chose to focus on the publishing sector, with the main objective of promoting the Tuscan and especially Sienese territory. Its publishing activity began with Pallium, a photographic book collecting images of all the drappelloni (banners) of the Palio di Siena created from 1945 to 1969; four additional volumes followed, covering the banners from the origins of the Palio up to 2007. Over the years, the catalogue expanded to include historical, social, touristic, and anthropological essays, poetry and sonnet collections, art exhibition catalogues, photographic books, and fiction. Particular attention was given to young readers through series such as Betti Junior, aimed at promoting discovery of the Tuscan territory and artistic heritage; an example is the volume dedicated to the Maestà di Duccio di Buoninsegna, presented during a press conference on 9 June 2021 with the participation of Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice, on the anniversary of the solemn procession that on 9 June 1311 accompanied the artist's work to the Duomo. In 2017, the publishing house created the Premio Letterario Via Francigena, with the patronage of the Municipality of Monteriggioni and the European Association of Via Francigena Ways (AEVF), awarding three short stories and a novel on the theme of travel along the ancient route linking Canterbury and Rome. In 2018, the prize, organized with the Region of Tuscany, AEVF, and the lead municipalities of the Tuscan Via Francigena (Lucca, Fucecchio, Pontremoli, Siena), focused on the language of storytelling, dedicating specific space to young people's texts. In 2020, the third edition of the prize was won by Andrea Borio; due to the pandemic, the award ceremony was held live on Facebook. In 2021, a collaboration began with the cultural association "I libri di Mompracem", based in Florence, with the aim of co-editing books proposed by the association, which includes numerous Tuscan writers. In 2023, the publishing house published its thousandth book, Siena. Così per ridere by Emilio Giannelli. The company remains a private, family-linked publishing brand deeply rooted in Sienese cultural identity.
