The Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, commonly identified by the reporting mark BLE, is a regional freight railroad serving northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. Its principal route runs approximately 139 miles from Conneaut, Ohio, on Lake Erie, southward to North Bessemer in Penn Hills near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The line forms an important industrial connection between Great Lakes shipping and steelmaking facilities in the Pittsburgh region. The railroad's corporate history reaches back to the Shenango and Allegheny Railroad, which began operating in October 1869. A succession of related companies gradually assembled the route and its associated infrastructure. In 1897, Andrew Carnegie organized the Pittsburgh, Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad to move iron ore from Conneaut Harbor to Carnegie Steel plants around Pittsburgh and to carry Pennsylvania coal northward on return movements. The railroad was formed substantially from predecessor companies including the Pittsburgh, Shenango and Lake Erie Railroad and the Butler and Pittsburgh Railroad. In 1900, the company adopted the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad name. Carnegie Steel held a long-term lease over the Pittsburgh, Shenango and Lake Erie operation. When United States Steel acquired Carnegie Steel in 1901, the lease and the railroad's industrial role effectively became part of the United States Steel system. For much of the twentieth century, the B&LE was closely associated with the movement of bulk raw materials for steel production. Iron ore, coal, limestone, and related industrial traffic shaped its route, equipment, yards, and operating practices. The railroad also handled passenger service historically, including a spur serving visitors to Conneaut Lake Park, but freight became overwhelmingly dominant. The railroad reached a substantial scale during the twentieth century. At the end of 1925 it operated 228 miles of railroad and 631 miles of track; by the end of 1970, the comparable figures were 220 miles of railroad and 489 miles of track. Its Greenville, Pennsylvania, complex became the principal location for locomotive and car maintenance. The company was also known for a distinctive orange-and-black locomotive scheme adopted in 1950 and for rust-colored ore cars intended to make staining from iron ore less conspicuous. In 1988, the Bessemer and Lake Erie became part of Transtar, a transportation holding company associated with United States Steel. In 2001, it moved into Great Lakes Transportation, another holding company assembling rail, dock, shipping, and barge assets connected with Great Lakes industrial logistics. Canadian National Railway acquired the Bessemer and Lake Erie on May 10, 2004, as part of its purchase of Great Lakes Transportation. CN continues to operate the route as its Bessemer Subdivision while retaining the BLE identity for local business and historical branding. The railroad's modern traffic remains centered on iron ore and coal. Ore originating on former Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range lines in Minnesota is shipped across the Great Lakes from Two Harbors to Conneaut, transloaded there, and hauled south by BLE trains to steel facilities in the Pittsburgh area, particularly United States Steel's Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Pennsylvania. The line interchanges with or connects to several other railroads, including Norfolk Southern, Union Railroad, CSX, and Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Although CN ownership has brought equipment transfers and repainting, the route continues to function as a specialized industrial freight corridor rather than as a broadly diversified national railroad.
History
The Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad is the product of more than a century of corporate succession and industrial route development. Its earliest identified ancestor, the Shenango and Allegheny Railroad, began operation in October 1869. Other predecessor companies, including the Pittsburgh, Shenango and Lake Erie Railroad and the Butler and Pittsburgh Railroad, contributed portions of the eventual system. Andrew Carnegie founded the Pittsburgh, Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad in 1897. The railroad was designed primarily as a materials corridor for Carnegie Steel. Iron ore arriving at Conneaut Harbor on Lake Erie could be moved south to steel plants in and around Pittsburgh, while coal from Pennsylvania could be carried north on return trips. The company therefore linked Great Lakes shipping with the raw-material requirements of the inland steel industry. The railroad changed its name to the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad in 1900. Carnegie Steel held a 99-year lease connected with the Pittsburgh, Shenango and Lake Erie operation. Following United States Steel's acquisition of Carnegie Steel in 1901, the B&LE's industrial traffic and corporate relationships became closely tied to the larger steel company. This relationship shaped the railroad's long-term emphasis on ore, coal, and other bulk commodities. The B&LE developed a main route between Conneaut and the Pittsburgh area, with important facilities at Greenville, Pennsylvania. The company built the K-O Line shortcut in 1901–1902 to avoid the older, winding route through Greenville. The shortcut reduced the distance between the KO and KY points by 3.1 miles and included a major viaduct over the Little Shenango River and several rail corridors near Osgood. The railroad also maintained connections with other carriers and historically held trackage rights into Erie, Pennsylvania. Passenger service existed alongside freight operations. The railroad maintained a spur to Conneaut Lake Park for excursion traffic and operated passenger and freight facilities in Erie. Over time, however, its identity became increasingly associated with heavy industrial freight. At the end of 1925, it operated 228 miles of road over 631 miles of track. At the end of 1970, the figures had declined to 220 miles of road and 489 miles of track, reflecting changes in the physical network while preserving the route's core function. Steam locomotives included 2-8-0 Consolidations, 2-10-2 Santa Fe locomotives, and powerful 2-10-4 Texas-type engines. The railroad was fully dieselized in 1953. Its diesel fleet included EMD F-units, SD9s, SD18s, and later SD38-series locomotives, as well as ALCo RSD15s. In the late 1990s, it acquired Southern Pacific SD40T-3 Tunnel Motors, which became especially recognizable on the B&LE. Two steam locomotives, numbers 643 and 154, have been preserved. The railroad's corporate structure changed substantially in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. In 1988 it became part of Transtar, a transportation holding company associated with United States Steel. In 2001 it entered Great Lakes Transportation. Canadian National Railway acquired Great Lakes Transportation and the B&LE on May 10, 2004. CN operates the former B&LE route as the Bessemer Subdivision, while the railroad continues to conduct business under its historic name. Under CN, the line's core ore movement remains intact. Ore from former Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range routes in Minnesota is loaded onto ships at Two Harbors, transported across Lake Superior and the Great Lakes system to Conneaut, transferred to BLE trains, and delivered to steel facilities around Pittsburgh. The route connects with Norfolk Southern at Wallace Junction and Shenango Yard, Union Railroad at North Bessemer Yard, CSX at Shenango Yard, and Buffalo and Pittsburgh at Calvin Yard. A former connection with the New York Central system at Osgood ended after Conrail abandoned the relevant line in 1988. The B&LE also operated the Queen Junction–Brady's Bend line, known as the Western Allegheny Division. Its remaining track was abandoned in 2000 and removed in 2002. In the active system, locomotives and operating practices have evolved under CN ownership, but the railroad remains a distinctive regional industrial carrier centered on the movement of raw materials to the Pittsburgh steel district.
