Overview
Bertazzoni is an Italian family-owned kitchen-appliance manufacturer based in Guastalla, in the Emilia-Romagna region. Founded by Francesco Bertazzoni in 1882, the business has remained under the direction of successive generations of the Bertazzoni family and is associated with premium cooking equipment designed and manufactured in Italy. Its historical identity began with wood-burning stoves, later expanding into gas, electric and induction cooking before broadening into a more complete kitchen-appliance portfolio. The company’s early development was closely connected with Italian industrialization. A first factory opened in 1909, with financing support from Angela Bonfanti, the wife of later family leader Napoleone Bertazzoni. Napoleone had experience in Turin’s automotive industry and introduced mass-production methods during the 1920s. In 1923 the business adopted the Fratelli Bertazzoni name and logo, while its La Germania ovens were promoted in the interwar period with the “In Every Home” positioning. After the Second World War, Angela Bonfanti helped secure control of the business for the family. A later family division contributed to the formation of SMEG, another appliance company with Bertazzoni-family ownership connections. Bertazzoni’s product evolution reflects successive changes in cooking technology. The company introduced gas cooking ovens in 1956, electric ovens in 1975 and induction cooktops in 2005. Wood-burning stoves remained part of production until the 1980s. In the modern market, Bertazzoni sells ranges, built-in ovens, cooktops, ventilation equipment, refrigerators, dishwashers and related kitchen products. Its designs draw on Italian automotive styling, using sculpted forms, bright finishes and color options intended to make major appliances visible elements of kitchen design. The range of colors and the use of red, yellow and other vivid finishes have become part of the brand’s visual distinction. Since 2015, the portfolio has been organized around four principal design families: Professional, Master, Modern and Heritage. Professional products emphasize commercial-inspired construction and stainless-steel detailing; Master combines an industrial appearance with residential use; Modern uses cleaner contemporary forms and glass or oxidized sheet metal; and Heritage references traditional domestic styling. The Professional Series received a Red Dot Design Award in 2018. The company has maintained manufacturing facilities in Guastalla while expanding internationally through distributors, local partnerships and showrooms. Bertazzoni began exporting to Manila around 1959–1960 and entered the Middle Eastern market in the 1990s with large ovens adapted to regional cooking practices. Distribution in the United States began in 2005, and the United States became its largest individual market by 2012. The company opened Casa Bertazzoni, its main showroom in Guastalla, in 2016, and opened its first Australian showroom in South Melbourne in 2019. Bertazzoni remains a family-led enterprise. Paolo Bertazzoni joined the company in 1981 and became president and chief executive in 1999, representing the fifth generation of family leadership. Other family members, including Elisabetta, Valentina and Nicola Bertazzoni, have held board or senior operational roles. From the early 2000s, the company adopted elements of the Toyota Production System to align production more closely with actual market demand. Its current positioning combines Italian manufacturing heritage, premium kitchen design, family ownership and a broad international distribution footprint.
History
Bertazzoni was established in 1882 in Guastalla by Francesco Bertazzoni. The company’s first products were wood-burning stoves, a category it continued making until the 1980s. Leadership passed through the Bertazzoni family, first to Francesco’s son Antonio and later to Napoleone Bertazzoni. In 1909 the company opened its first factory, with financial assistance from Angela Bonfanti, Napoleone’s wife. Napoleone’s previous work in Turin’s automotive industry influenced the company’s later approach to industrial production and design. During the 1920s, Napoleone introduced mass-production methods. In 1923 the company adopted the Fratelli Bertazzoni brand identity and logo, and in 1926 it received accreditation from the Reggio Emilia Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The La Germania oven line was promoted extensively between the First and Second World Wars, including through the “In Every Home” slogan. Napoleone died in 1939. After the Second World War, Angela Bonfanti borrowed funds to purchase the business from her in-laws and consolidate ownership with her children. Her son Francesco later took over management. Family differences eventually resulted in the creation of SMEG, which remains connected to the wider Bertazzoni family history but is a separate company. Bertazzoni modernized its cooking technology in stages. Gas cooking ovens were introduced in 1956, electric ovens in 1975 and induction cooktops in 2005. The company continued to manufacture wood-burning stoves for several decades after introducing gas products. International activity began early: Bertazzoni exported to Manila in approximately 1959–1960 and licensed local production of La Germania appliances. The business later developed regional partnerships in the Philippines and entered Middle Eastern markets in the 1990s with large ovens designed for local culinary requirements. The United States became a major growth market after Bertazzoni began distributing there in 2005. Some oven models were enlarged for American cooking practices, including the preparation of large Thanksgiving turkeys. By 2007, Bertazzoni products were available in more than 60 countries, and the United States was the company’s largest single market by 2012. During the early 2000s, the company also adopted the Toyota Production System, using market demand rather than maximum factory capacity as the basis for production planning. The modern brand has emphasized design as well as cooking function. Its appliances use forms and colors influenced by Italian automotive culture, including bright red and yellow finishes. Touchscreen oven controls and automated cooking programs appeared in 2011. From 2015, products were organized into Professional, Master, Modern and Heritage design families. The Professional Series received a Red Dot Design Award in 2018. Bertazzoni opened Casa Bertazzoni in Guastalla in 2016 and its first Australian showroom in South Melbourne in 2019. The company remains family-owned and headquartered in Guastalla. Paolo Bertazzoni joined the business in 1981 and became its fifth-generation president and chief executive in 1999. His sister Elisabetta has served on the board, while the next generation, including Valentina and Nicola Bertazzoni, has taken senior roles. In 2024 Nicola joined the National Kitchen & Bath Association board, and Paolo received Italy’s Cavaliere del Lavoro distinction. In 2025 Paolo was inducted into the Kitchen & Bath Industry Hall of Fame.
