Overview

Berryessa Gap Winery is a winery in Winters, California. Its farming roots go back several generations: Dan Martinez, Sr., a first generation farmer of Spanish immigrants, established an orchard business in Winters and in 1969 partnered with winemaker and wine historian Ernest Peninou to create a grapevine rootstock nursery. In 2000, Dan Martinez Jr. and farming partner Santiago Moreno purchased the Coble Ranch overlooking Berryessa Gap and planted it to vineyards; the Coble Ranch is the estate vineyard from which Berryessa Gap's grapes are sourced. Winery operations began on Main Street in 2002 in the repurposed old Winters Winery facility. The winery produces red and white wines including Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Barbera, Malbec, Albariño, Verdejo, and Sauvignon Blanc, and operates a tasting room in historic Downtown Winters.

History

Berryessa Gap's connection to the land runs deep with farming roots going back several generations. Dan Martinez, Sr., father of the owners of Berryessa Gap and a first generation farmer of Spanish immigrants, established a successful orchard business in Winters and in 1969 partnered with winemaker and wine historian Ernest Peninou to create a grapevine rootstock nursery that would become renowned in Napa and Sonoma Valley vineyards and beyond. In 2000, Dan Martinez Jr. and collaborative business and farming partner Santiago Moreno purchased the Coble Ranch at the crest of rolling hills overlooking Berryessa Gap and planted this never before cultivated land to vineyards; the Coble Ranch is the estate vineyard from which Berryessa Gap's grapes are sourced. Winery operations began on Main Street in 2002 as the old Winters Winery facility was repurposed, and it is now the location of the expanded wine operations. The winery's tasting room is located in historic Downtown Winters on Main Street, and its production facility and tasting room on Highway 128 anchor the eastern gateway to the Napa Valley and beyond.
