Overview
Berounský medvěd is a family brewery (rodinný pivovar) in Beroun, Czech Republic, founded by the Mayer couple. It operates a brewery restaurant and a malt house in Suchomasty, and presents itself as a unique 'brewery open-air museum' where beer is brewed with direct wood firing and bottom fermentation from traditional ingredients.
History
The first mentions of brewing beer in Beroun date to 1295, when King Wenceslas II promoted Beroun to a royal town and granted its burghers the right to brew and malt, as well as the mile right. In 1872 the burghers built a shared brewery, which brewed beer until 1978, when its operation was halted. After a twenty-year pause, the Mayer couple revived the brewing tradition in Beroun and founded the family brewery Berounský medvěd.
