Overview

The Berliner Kabarett Anstalt (BKA) is a cabaret theatre located at Mehringdamm 34 in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district of Berlin, Germany. It was founded in April 1988 by Rainer Rubbert and Jürgen Müller, former members of the cabaret group CaDeWe (Cabaret des Westens). The theatre occupies a building constructed in 1913 by Daniel Ehrenfried, which previously housed the Kaufhaus Jonaß department store and later served as the headquarters for Telefunken from 1948 to 1952. The BKA also operated a tent (chapiteau) that moved to various locations, including the Kulturforum at Potsdamer Platz between 1991 and 1998. In April 1998, the tent began operating under the name Luftschloß, but the operators moved to Ostbahnhof in summer 2004 and filed for bankruptcy in October 2004. Over the years, the BKA has hosted numerous renowned artists such as Tim Fischer, Sissi Perlinger, Helge Schneider, Josef Hader, Nina Hagen, and Wladimir Kaminer. The theatre continues to present a regular programme of cabaret, comedy, improvisational theatre, and music, with both in-house productions and guest performances. Its official website lists upcoming shows featuring artists like Piero, Katie Freudenschuss, and Wladimir Kaminer, as well as recurring events like the improvisational theatre 'Chaos Royal' every Monday.

History

The Berliner Kabarett Anstalt was founded in April 1988 by Rainer Rubbert and Jürgen Müller, who had previously been involved with the cabaret group CaDeWe (Cabaret des Westens). They initially started under a tent on Mariannenplatz with a cabaret called Die Enterbten (The Disinherited). In April 1988, they also began using the space of a former youth disco called Dachluke at Mehringdamm 34. The building, constructed in 1913 by Daniel Ehrenfried, had a varied history: after World War I it housed the Kaufhaus Jonaß department store, and from 1948 to 1952 it was the headquarters of Telefunken. The BKA's tent frequently changed locations, including a stint at the Kulturforum on Potsdamer Platz between 1991 and 1998. Artists such as Tim Fischer, Sissi Perlinger, and Helge Schneider performed there regularly; Schneider played his show 'Guten Tach Auf Wiedersehen!' in 1993 while living in a nearby camper. In April 1998, the BKA tent began operating under the name Luftschloß, but the operators moved to Ostbahnhof in summer 2004 and filed for bankruptcy in October 2004. Meanwhile, the theatre at Mehringdamm continued to host both in-house productions and guest artists. Over time, internal productions declined in favour of guest artists such as Susanne Betancor, Georgette Dee, and Michael Mittermeier. Notably, the band Rosenstolz presented their first CD there in 1991. Other regular performers included Erwin Grosche, Les Écoliers écrasés, and the Platypus Theater. The BKA remains an active venue for cabaret and comedy in Berlin.
