History
On 28 July 1879, the Sektion Berlin, not yet ten years old, inaugurated the Berliner Hütte. It was the first Schutzhaus of the Zillertaler Alpen, with a floor area of 10 x 6 m and equipped with a kitchen, common room and straw lager under the roof. From 1882 the hut was operated in summer. Soon the building could no longer cope with the rush of mountaineers. The modest extensions of 1885 and 1888 provided only temporary relief. In 1892, construction of the 'Logierhaus' began, the first multi-storey building. Only six years later, with the dining hall added to the east, the standard for protection huts was clearly exceeded, creating a highly representative room with over 4 m ceiling height, large windows and elaborate carving. Plans soon matured to connect the two seemingly isolated tall building volumes with a central building. In 1910 and 1911 the hut was transformed for the last time into a large construction site and the towering 'Haupthaus' rose. With its large entrance hall and huge dining hall, the Berliner Hütte gained the nimbus of the unique. Alongside the stately style, the interior received the most modern technology of the time. As early as 1898 a telephone line was installed, in 1906 a post and telegraph office followed, and in 1911 a gas generation plant and a hydroelectric power station were put into operation. A hut-owned bakery and a shoemaker's workshop rounded off the service offering for guests. In 1997 the hut was placed under monument protection as the first hut of the DAV.
