Overview

Bergmann & Franz Nachf. GmbH & Co. KG is a German specialist wholesaler (Fachgroßhandel) for sanitary, heating, installation and tile products. Founded in Berlin in 1874 by Otto Bergmann and Adolph Franz as a lead pipe factory and pipe wholesaler, the company has evolved into a regional distribution group serving the Berlin and Brandenburg markets. Together with its subsidiaries it employs around 375 people across 31 locations and is a member of the Eurobaustoff purchasing cooperative. The company's history spans more than a century of ownership and structural change. It was incorporated as an Aktiengesellschaft in 1924, converted to a Kommanditgesellschaft in 1930, and later joined by August Wollschläger & Co. GmbH as a general partner in 1964. In 1995 a new logistics centre with 9,000 square metres of warehouse space opened in Blumberg; this was expanded in 2007 to a total site area of 43,000 square metres, including 20,000 square metres of warehousing. In 2010, in cooperation with the electrical wholesaler Obeta, the company opened the "Berliner Energie Zentrum", a showroom for renewable energy products. In 2018 the Irish building materials group CRH acquired Bergmann & Franz. After CRH sold its European building materials distribution division to the US financial investor Blackstone in 2019, the company was integrated into Blackstone's Building Materials Europe (BME) group, where it is managed alongside the northern German Paulsen Group, Hagebau and Bauking. Today the business is led by managing directors Andreas Ubl and Lars Paulsen.

History

Bergmann & Franz was founded in Berlin in 1874 by Otto Bergmann and Adolph Franz under the name "Bleirohrfabrik und Röhrengroßhandlung Bergmann & Franz" (lead pipe factory and pipe wholesaler). In 1900 co-founder Adolph Franz died; Carl Bachmann, son-in-law of Otto Bergmann, and Gustav Eberstein continued the business as Bergmann & Franz Nachf. In 1924, during the Golden Twenties, the company was incorporated as Bergmann & Franz Nachf. Aktiengesellschaft, and from 1928 it focused on the trade in sanitary fixtures. Two years later, in 1930, it was converted from a stock corporation into a Kommanditgesellschaft (limited partnership). The partners at that time were Rudolf Hahn and Werner Ehrig. In 1964 August Wollschläger & Co. GmbH joined as a general partner (Komplementärgesellschafter). Rudolf Hahn died in 1966, and the limited partner Werner Ehrig died in 1988. In 1995 the company opened a new logistics centre with 9,000 square metres of warehouse space in Blumberg. In 1999 Markus Ehrig-Holzapfel joined the company as managing director; he died in 2012. Today the company is led by Andreas Ubl and Lars Paulsen. In 2007 the Blumberg logistics centre was expanded to a total area of 43,000 square metres, of which 20,000 square metres are warehouse space. In 2010, in cooperation with the electrical wholesaler Obeta, the "Berliner Energie Zentrum" was opened, presenting products related to renewable energies. In 2018 the Irish building materials manufacturer CRH took over Bergmann & Franz. After CRH sold its European building materials distribution division to the US financial investor Blackstone in 2019, Blackstone integrated the company into its Building Materials Europe (BME) group, where it stands alongside the northern German Paulsen Group, Hagebau and Bauking under common management.
