Overview

B.E.MARUBISHI Co., Ltd. (丸菱バイオエンジ) is a Japanese engineering and equipment company specializing in culture apparatus (fermenters) and bioprocess machinery. Founded in August 1954 as a division of Marubishi Kogyo Co., Ltd., the business began manufacturing and selling small-scale fermentation equipment at a time when the word "biotechnology" had not yet been coined. It was separated in 1957 as Marubishi Seisakusho, reorganized in 1959 as Marubishi Rika Sochi Kenkyusho Co., Ltd. with capital of 1,000 thousand yen, and in 1984 changed its name to Marubishi Bioengineering Co., Ltd. The company is headquartered in Chiyoda City, Tokyo, and operates a Chiba factory in Chiba City, plus sales offices in western Japan and a Thai subsidiary, B.E.Marubishi (Thailand) Co., Ltd. The company designs and manufactures culture apparatus for general microorganisms, animal and plant cells, and special-condition equipment such as pressurized culture systems. Its bioprocess units include single-use units, continuous centrifugal separation units, and membrane separation and concentration units. It also provides validation support and full engineering services covering basic planning, construction, maintenance, and decommissioning of bioprocess facilities. Its products serve upstream and downstream bioprocesses across biopharmaceuticals, regenerative medicine, environmental energy, fine chemicals, and food and brewing. B.E.MARUBISHI positions itself as a "total supporter" of bio-related equipment, offering capacities from under 1 liter to over 15 kL for microbial culture. It has pursued advanced initiatives such as practical bioreactors for high-efficiency biomass energy production and automated culture systems for mesenchymal stem cells. The company received the Science and Technology Agency Director-General's Award in 1989 and ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2005. It remains a privately held Japanese company, with Toshihiko Yamagata serving as Representative Director and President.

History

B.E.MARUBISHI Co., Ltd. traces its origins to August 1954, when Marubishi Kogyo Co., Ltd. was established and one of its divisions began manufacturing and selling small-scale fermentation apparatus. In August 1957, the small fermentation apparatus division was separated and established as Marubishi Seisakusho in Konya-cho, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. In March 1959, the organization was changed to Marubishi Rika Sochi Kenkyusho Co., Ltd. (Marubishi Physical and Chemical Apparatus Research Institute), starting as a specialized manufacturer of fermenters with capital of 1,000 thousand yen. In March 1961, the company built the Okudo Factory in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, and in April 1961 began overseas exports. In March 1967, the head office was relocated to Kajicho, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. (株式会社丸菱バイオエンジ). In April 1989, the company received the Science and Technology Agency Director-General's Award. In November 1989, the head office moved to 2-10-15 Higashikanda, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. In April 1991, Tamiyoshi Yamagata (former chairman, deceased) received the Medal with Yellow Ribbon, and in May 2001 he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette. Over more than six decades, the company has grown with the development of biotechnology, providing bioprocess equipment and engineering to serve as a bridge to the bioindustry. Its product history includes two-tank, three-type fermentation apparatus in 1954, twelve MSJ-U30L automatic culture apparatus in 1970, pilot plants in 1980, and culture, cell separation, and concentration equipment with validation for the biopharmaceutical field in 2000. The company continues to pursue advanced initiatives such as practical bioreactors for high-efficiency biomass energy production and automated culture systems for mesenchymal stem cells.
