Overview
Bely Gorodok Shipyard (Russian: Белогородская судоверфь, also known by the Soviet-era abbreviation BSSRZ) is a shipbuilding and ship-repair enterprise located in the urban settlement of Bely Gorodok in Tver Oblast, Russia. It was founded in 1939 at the point where the Khotcha River flows into the Volga, a site chosen for its access to the Volga waterway and, after the construction of the Moscow Canal, to Moscow as a transport hub. The yard became a town-forming enterprise for Bely Gorodok. Over its history the yard has delivered more than 300 vessels of various types, including tugs, self-propelled and non-self-propelled barges, dredgers, technical vessels, passenger motor ships and boats. Its main lines of activity today cover repair of technical, auxiliary, cargo and passenger fleets; deep and cosmetic modernization of river vessels; construction of river and small craft; production of grabs, utilization and hot-water boilers, and tug-anchor winches; winter lay-up of vessels in the water area and on the slipway; production of automobile trailers; and one-off fabrication of metal structures and metal parts using the plant's machine-tool stock. The enterprise operates as a limited liability company (ООО) and remains active in the Russian river shipbuilding and ship-repair sector.
History
Bely Gorodok Shipyard was founded in 1939. The plant, known under the abbreviation BSSRZ (Belogorodsky Shipbuilding and Ship-Repair Yard), was laid out at the confluence of the Khotcha River and the Volga. The location was chosen because of the proximity of the Volga and, following the construction of the Moscow Canal, of Moscow as a transport hub. The yard became a town-forming enterprise for the urban settlement of Bely Gorodok in Tver Oblast. Across its operating history the yard has produced more than 300 vessels of various types, including tugs, self-propelled and non-self-propelled barges, dredgers, technical vessels, passenger motor ships and boats. In the post-Soviet period the enterprise continued as a limited liability company (ООО «Белогородская судоверфь»), combining shipbuilding and ship repair. Its main activities have included repair of technical, auxiliary, cargo and passenger fleets; deep and cosmetic modernization of river vessels; construction of river and small craft; manufacture of grabs, utilization and hot-water boilers, and tug-anchor winches; winter lay-up of vessels in the water area and on the slipway; production of automobile trailers; and one-off fabrication of metal structures and metal parts using the plant's machine-tool stock.
