Because the subject is a historic building rather than a brand, this dossier is intentionally short and marked for review.

History

Bellwood is a historic plantation house in Chesterfield County, Virginia, south of Richmond. The land was part of a plantation owned by the Ward family from the mid-17th century. In 1665 Judge Richard Ward acquired 1,337 acres on the south bank of the James River known as Sheffields Plantation. The manor house now known as Bellwood was built between 1790 and 1804 as a two-story, five-bay timberframe I-house in the Georgian style. Over time the property was also known as New Oxford and Auburn Chase. In 1887 James Bellwood, a Canadian farmer, acquired the house and about 2,000 acres, naming it Bellwood Farms and restoring the depleted soil through crop rotation and drainage. In 1941, 631 acres including the manor house were acquired by the U.S. Government to construct the Richmond Quartermaster Depot; the house is maintained as the officers' club. As a historic building, it has no commercial brand history.
