Overview
Beletra Almanako (often abbreviated BA) is an international literary magazine published in Esperanto, the international planned language. It was launched in September 2007 and is published by Ulrich Becker under the Mondial publishing house in New York. The magazine appears three times per year (in February, June, and October) and each issue runs between 130 and 176 pages. It publishes original prose, poetry, essays, book reviews, interviews, and theatrical works, either written directly in Esperanto or translated from ethnic languages. The editorial team includes István Ertl (Luxembourg), Suso Moinhos (Spain), Anina Stecay (Germany), Probal Dasgupta (India), Jesper Lykke Jacobsen (France), and Nicola Ruggiero (Italy). Jorge Camacho served as the first editor-in-chief. The magazine is distributed worldwide by Ingram Book Company and is part of Ingram's Global Connect Program, which allows printing by local partners in Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Russia, China, Spain, and South Korea. It is also available through the Espresso Book Machine network, enabling on-site printing in bookstores and libraries. Since 2024, subscriptions are no longer handled directly by Mondial; each issue is sold as a separate book, though subscriptions remain available through the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA). The magazine has an ISSN (1937-3325) and each issue has a unique ISBN. It is a significant platform for Esperanto literature, publishing works specially written for it as well as high-quality texts previously available only online.
History
Beletra Almanako was launched in September 2007 as a literary magazine in Esperanto. It was initiated by Jorge Camacho, who wrote the presentation in the first issue, noting that the Esperanto cultural scene in 2007 showed signs of stagnation: the magazine Fonto had ceased, other magazines like La Ondo de Esperanto and La Gazeto were strongly tied to a particular region, place, or person, and Libera Folio remained online and focused on general Esperanto movement topics. The initiators believed a new international literary magazine was needed, but not yet a monthly or bimonthly paper magazine. Thus, they decided to publish Beletra Almanako in book format. Initially, it was published every six months, but since 2009 it has appeared three times a year, in February, June, and October. Each issue has between 120 and 180 pages. The publisher is Ulrich Becker of the Mondial publishing house in New York. The editor-in-chief was Jorge Camacho, and the co-editors included Probal Dasgupta, István Ertl, and Tim Westover (from issue 18). Later, the editorial team evolved to include Anina Stecay, Suso Moinhos, Jesper Lykke Jacobsen, and Nicola Ruggiero. The magazine publishes poetry, fiction and non-fiction prose, essays, reviews, interviews, letters, debates, and theatrical works, either originally in Esperanto or translated. In agreement with the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA), works awarded in the UEA fine arts competition also appear in Beletra Almanako. The magazine includes material specially written for it, as well as high-quality texts previously published online but not in print. Unlike a conventional magazine, subscription in advance is not required; individual issues can be ordered or purchased separately. Each issue has a unique ISBN in addition to the series ISSN. Some issues are available for purchase on online platforms like Google Play. Mondial also offers the possibility to subscribe to multiple issues in advance. Beletra Almanako is distributed by Ingram Book Company, a major US distributor, reaching almost 40,000 retailers, libraries, schools, and universities worldwide. It is part of Ingram's Global Connect Program, allowing printing by Ingram's printer partners in Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Russia, China, Spain, and South Korea, saving overseas shipping charges. It is also part of the worldwide Espresso Book Machine (EBM) system, a network of print-on-demand machines in the US, UK, Canada, Europe, and Asia, often located within bookstores and libraries, which can print and bind Beletra Almanako on site within minutes. Since 2024, BA is no longer subscribable directly from Mondial; each issue is now sold as a separate book, though subscriptions remain available through UEA. The current issue is Beletra Almanako 54. The magazine also offers PDF versions for subscription and purchase.
