Overview

Belden Barns is a family-owned winery located on Sonoma Mountain in Santa Rosa, California. Established in 2005 by Nate and Lauren Belden, the estate occupies a historic property that has served as a dairy farm, prune orchard, and turn-of-the-century rural retreat with a dance hall and stagecoach stop. The winery focuses on estate-grown wines from its 18.5-acre vineyard, which includes the historic Steiner Vineyard site—one of the first vineyards planted in the Sonoma Mountain/Bennett Valley region after a 60-year absence. The Beldens acquired the property in 2005 and began redeveloping the vineyard, saving a 1.5-acre block of Pinot Noir clone 667 planted in 1998 and installing high-density, state-of-the-art plantings for the remainder. The vineyard grows Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. Belden Barns has been recognized by Forbes as "one of Sonoma County's most compelling new wineries of the last decade." The winery offers tastings, wine club memberships, and events, and its fruit is sought after by highly discerning producers such as Argot, Carlisle, Donelan Family, Enkidu, Eric Kent, Holdredge, Three Sticks, and Vaughn Duffy.

History

Belden Barns was founded in 2005 when Nate and Lauren Belden acquired a historic property on Sonoma Mountain in Santa Rosa, California. The site has a long history of farming and hospitality dating back to the late 1800s, having served as a dairy farm, prune orchard, and turn-of-the-century rural retreat complete with a dance hall and stagecoach stop. The property includes the historic Steiner Vineyard, one of the first vineyards planted in the Sonoma Mountain/Bennett Valley region after a 60-year absence. David Steiner established the vineyard in the early 1970s, initially planting Cabernet Sauvignon. When the site proved too cool for consistent high-quality Cabernet, Rod Berglund of Joseph Swan convinced Steiner to plant Pinot Noir instead. Steiner Vineyard became a go-to source for highly acclaimed California Pinot Noirs beginning in the early 1990s. After a series of ownership changes, the Beldens acquired the site in 2005 and began redeveloping the vineyard. Roughly ten of the original thirty acres under vine were still standing, but most vines were virused and impacted by phylloxera. They saved only one block—a 1.5-acre stand of Pinot Noir clone 667 planted in 1998. The remainder of the 18.5 acres developed to date were installed in high-density, state-of-the-art plantings. The vineyard now grows Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. Belden Barns has been recognized by Forbes as "one of Sonoma County's most compelling new wineries of the last decade." The winery offers tastings, wine club memberships, and events, and its fruit is used by highly discerning producers including Argot, Carlisle, Donelan Family, Enkidu, Eric Kent, Holdredge, Three Sticks, and Vaughn Duffy.
