Overview
The Belarusian Historical Society (Belarusian: Беларускае гістарычнае таварыства, БГТ; Polish: Białoruskie Towarzystwo Historyczne) is a Polish public organization with its office in Białystok. It was established in 1993 to promote research, documentation and popularization of Belarusian history, culture and heritage, primarily through scholarly publishing, conferences, exhibitions and youth camps. Its membership is composed largely of professional historians — university lecturers, history teachers, archivists, museum workers — as well as journalists from Belarusian magazines, radio and television. Almost all members are authors or editors of at least one book, collection or scholarly journal, or contributors to radio and television programmes. The Society's main printed organ is the journal Białoruskie Zeszyty Historyczne. It publishes books in Polish and Belarusian written or edited by its members, maintains its own library, and since 2007 has patronized the Belarusian internet library Kamunikat.org. By 2008, 32 people had passed through the Society. The organization operates as a non-profit scholarly and cultural association rather than a commercial enterprise, but it functions as a brand-like publisher and platform for Belarusian historical studies in Poland and the Belarusian diaspora.
